Hi,
I had a chance today to compare my PRS500 to the PRS505 at the Borders store in Dulles airport. They only carry the silver model, dark is not in their program, however they were vero open and let me play with it for a while. As many others have reported screen refresh rate is the same as for the 500, however even with text the 505 starts with a fuzzy screen and then sharpens it where the 500 just goes through the "negative" step and is instantly sharp. Maybe I am only used to the old way, but it is a little more plpeasant to the eye. In general I like the feel of the older unit better, the 505 feels flimsy (again only my taste). Nevertheless I like the whiteness of the 505 much better than the grey of my 500 screen. That begs two questions: 1) Is the 505 screen just new and will get gray over time also, or is the ageing of e-ink fixed with the new display. 2) Is it possible to have the display replaced or are they so different that the 500 can not accept the new display? I'd really like the old reader with the whiter display. |

I have done a side-by-side examination of a new Reader and my 11 month old unit and there was variation in the background color or the contrast. (If anything my older unit looked a bit lighter in the background but not by enough to convince anyone else.)
From what we know from people that have sent in their units to Sony for out of warranty repair the cost to replace the screen alone is about equal to the cost of the Reader when new. If possible this would nearly double the cost of the Reader. Yes it is better, but is it $300 better? |
