Question Sun, glare, and Android.

Hello!

I was wondering if there is any reasonably recent device currently available that runs Android and allows proper reading in bright sunlight.

Mostly I'm thinking of getting an Android phone, but so far I read only quite negative feedback on reading on a phone ("below 6 inch is unconfortable") and it would seem that not single android device out there currently uses transflective screen technologies or even non-glossy screens (and I had anticlimatic experiences with matte anti-glare foils on glossy notebook screens).

Is there currently any Android device, preferably a phone, out there, that is suitable as a pocket-ereader, or am I just out of luck without a dedicated e-ink device?

Yes. B&N's eInk "Nook" readers run Android.

I just recently read a statistic where a large portion of the eBook market where phone readers. I'm not sure where you've heard reading on the phone is bad. I've had different screen size devices 3", 4", 6", 7". I've read full books on all of them and there is not much difference, unless you need huge fonts or are an extremely fast reader. Lager screen size does improve the reading for PDF however.

However is one of your requirments is reading in direct sunlight only eInk devices can do that today. There is no phone or tablet that can be used to read in direct sunlight.

And they've been not just reading, but writing novels on cheap cell phones in Japan for years.

I read for 20+ years on various PDA and phones, but in the last few years my close-up vision has really started to deteriorate (nothing bad, just the normal effects of aging) and I find that I really appreciate the larger screen of a dedicated reader.

Hey I wrote a post on my phone Slowly getting there.

That second article "Thumbs Race ..." cracked me up. It reminded me when I got my first capacitive smartphone(BB Storm) my thumbs where sore and I thought I was getting carpal tunnel on both of them. I had to slow down on my emails. Thankfully the Android phone allows for different ways to enter text.

I have a few years left before I get to that stage, not looking forward to it.

I've got reading glasses which work perfectly well; I just can't be bothered to put them on sometimes .

Well ... My first gen Palm Pre with AMOLED screen performed very well in bright sun. Most notably on the golf course with a range finder app.

Too bad the build quality was so junk!

Okay, being out of luck with a good solution, let's restate the question:

Out of the Android phones currently or soon on the market, which are best suited for the use in bright sunlight in general (ebook-reading being now rather a nice bonus than the main use). My best bet currently seems to be the sort of outdated Nokia N900 (replacing Maemo by a custom Android rom), but while it is often stated as "transflective", technical detail lists of retailers in particular are suspiciously quiet about the used screen technology.

Carrier versions of a device don't help me by the way, as I'm living in Austria.
