Payment via PayPal and debit cards

Note to Kobo folks

Europeans, and many other countries, don't have a lot of credit cards. Indeed many European and non North American computer geeks don't have any credit cards at all. This causes significant problems with hotel reservations for Microsoft geek conferences.

Paypal is becoming more and more popular all the time.

I'd strongly suggest working on allowing debit cards and PayPal as a method of payment.

I can use my debit card to buy from Kobo. But I get charged an international transaction fee. So I don't do that. The last purchase I made was using a Borders gift card that did not charge me extra. Kobo really needs a presence in the USA to avoid these fees.

Kobo has said they are working on Paypal for work but I imagine it's not as easy as it sounds to do that for such a large company and website. Debit does indeed work but as JSWolf mentioned it will charge you americans an international fee. Consider it payback from Canada for all the international fees and hassles I have dealt with over the years.

Hehehe.

I don't see why PayPal would be a big deal. I use it in my business a lot.

I'm Canadian so I deal with such issues frequently. I always, ALWAYS ask US vendors to ship via USPS because UPS charges an obscene rate of a minimum of $20 customs brokerage fee. In other words I never, ever deal with UPS. If the vendor insists on UPS I go elsewhere.

I agree. I use Paypal whenever possible to shop on the internet. However since Kobobooks doesn't allow that option I picked up a Chapters-Indigo gift card and just take it to Chapters or Coles when I need to reload it to buy a book or books. Actually just did that yesterday.

As for UPS, yes they suck ..... I've done the same thing, if a store only offers UPS for shipping then I don't buy from them. UPS is a bloody rip off. They charge a customs brokerage fee whether or not you have to pay for customs.

www.kobobooks.com/egiftcards is an option. You can load up to $100 and gift yourself. That would minimise the international fees YOUR credit card company chooses to afix as you'd pay it only once.

Sorry, but that is not an option. I would still be charged a fee for buying the gift card. The other issue Kobo has is that yes, I can buy a Borders gift card ti use with Kobo without any fees, but if I have say a little balance on one gift card and balance on another gift card, I cannot use both to avoid a fee. I have to use up what I have on one and pay via my bank card and get charged a fee.

Kobo needs to allow multiple Borders gift cards or get a US presence and fast. They are losing money as eBooks I might have bought from them are not being bought from them.

I see that PayPal is now an option when I purchase a book (I'm in Canada). I just saw this today for the first time.

I see PayPal too!!! Way to go KOBO books! Also a new release for only $9.99! Now if only they would send someone over to do my dishes, my life would be complete

Yup ... just saw that as well ... Canada. Is it available elsewhere? As far as I know, Kobo is the only "big four" web-based ebook stores that offers PayPal. Nice one, Kobo!

Absolutely! $9.99 is much better than I had hoped! Now I just need to find a way to read it at work without anyone noticing!

I only see it at $14.99 and I don't see a paypal option either.

Also, the site is running very slow when it responds which isn't much.

It's running *really* slowly for me too, but I was able to get it to eventually complete my purchase.

Maybe the $9.99 and Paypal is only a Canadian thing
