Multiple Spacing

Sigil dosent seem to let you put more than one space between letters/ words, or let you tab. But I did see in one ebook I have spacing generated in code view by using a bold vertical line/graphic for each space but havent been able to replicate it. I just get question marks on the book view when I try. I'm obviously not doing something quite right, any ideals? Anyone come across this before?

RKEP71:

Tabs don't exist in html, nor do multiple spaces, unless you use non-breaking spaces. I don't know what you're seeing as a "bold vertical line/graphic" as a spacer, so please post the code/chapter/file/book here so we can see what you're talking about.

Might be a ensp or emsp or thinsp (not to be confused with nbsp)
with the page coding set wrong.

One word of caution on non breaking spaces. Once they are in, the first word and the second word will always be displayed together. If they are long and your screen is small, you can unexpected and often unwanted blank lines, if the reader does not have width to display the combination.

That is the definition of a nbsp. It is non breaking. However a regular blank can be interspersed that the non-breaking should be just the blank character. There is a CSS technique that can be used to widen the spacing between characters.

Sorry got my facts a little mixed up. I have found an ebook using bold vertical lines/graphics to generate spaces. If you see the attached it shows them on both code and book views. When viewed with my sony software/ereader these are spaces. The problem is if I change the font it then appears on my sony software/ereader as question marks. The only difference is that my fonts are individual, i.e. seperate normal, bold, italic etc. Where as the attached is one item for the whole font family. I don't have another font family like this to try to see if that works, or if there is something else within the ebook that makes it work with only that font. It would be nice if it would work with individual fonts??? Also if you delete the style in sigil and then add the same one back in it dosent work anymore and I get the question marks. I tried this for transfering to other books.

It uses a trick font that has empty code points with no defined glyph, and uses those as 'spaces'.

This is VERY BAD PRACTICE and whoever did this deserves to be shot. DO NOT attempt to emulate this. Use non-breaking spaces as described above. But the best way to get columns lined up like this is simply to use a table.
