Battery Display
In the kobo wifi.....
After the battery indicator gets down to quarter strength...(I think that is how it appears on my display).... are there any further warnings or levels shown before it shuts down and has to be recharged? I've never waited that long... but since it appears the number of recharges are somewhat limited, I would rather wait until it NEEDS to be recharged before I plug it back in. |

Don't do this. Lithium ion batteries as used in modern portable electronics aren't prone to the charge memory effect that NiCd or NiMH batteries are. In fact, constant full charge-discharge cycles will shorten the lifespan of your battery.
The current wisdom is to top up your battery when convenient and limit full discharge to once every 10 cycles or so to ensure the battery remains calibrated. Battery University has many informative articles on the care and feeding of rechargeable batteries. |

I couldn't agree more with you, Ted. To get the best battery performance you have to understand the underlying battery technology.

On my 3rd battery charge now. 2nd also lasted about 2 weeks. I charged for 3 hours this time (with a 1 amp charger), and this time the battery indicator got all the way up to the top and stayed there when I disconnected. Now if it shows some improvement in calibration at the low end (i.e., getting lower than 25% before it dies suddenly and completely), I'll be happy!
I turn it on and put it in Sleep mode after connecting it to the charger so I can see the battery level on the screen. It does show the battery filling up in Sleep mode. |

Kobo lasts about 1-2 weeks for me as well. Then again, I have it constantly on for hours at a time just because I tend to be doing something else while I'm reading. One of the things I do wonder about is how the IR affects battery life. It has to use some electricity to get input, so does that mean that we sacrifice battery life for better response from the touch screen? |

USB ports are specified to supply a standard maximum of 500 ma (0.5 amps) current, but USB chargers range in capacity from about 300 ma to 1.5 amps. A battery can be charged faster with more current, so devices meant to charge from a USB port will probably try to draw the maximum 500 ma, but no more than that to avoid overloading the USB port. If a USB charger can provide more than 500 ma, the device probably won't take advantage of it to charge faster unless it was designed to use that charger. If the charger provides less than 500 ma, the battery will still charge, but slower than normal.
