How do you reset the thing?!
So my reader froze and has been frozen for the past 36 or more hours. How do you reset it? I see a tiny little hole at the bottom of my reader with RESET next to it, but how can you use that to reset it?

Straighten out a paper clip and poke it into the hole, that does a soft reset. If you need to do a full return-to-factory-state reset, follow the instructions in this thread. This will erase all your books from the reader!

Do as Scaly says, but as this is a e-ink device, nothing will happen (e.g. the screen will not clear)
You will have to flip the power-switch to restart the reader and get the book-loading screen. And maybe you will have to plug in a wall-charger as the battery maybe flat. HTH Mark Last edited by Mark Nord; 07-22-2011 at 03:15 PM. |

![]() Though if you do the factory-reset, powering off and on is involved, and after the reset you need to set it up as if it's a new device again, including the wifi info if it's a 950. |

I tried to use the paperclip but it's still frozen. Am I supposed to hold it for a long time or is there some other way I can try to unfreeze my reader? I will later go and try to do the hard reset but, I'm just curious as to what you guys think... Is it "normal" for my reader to have been frozen for the past 56 hours?
Because my old reader, same version but got it fixed from damage, froze for half an hour and then unfroze, but is having 56 hours serious or not serious? |

All you should need to do is push in the paper clip until you feel it press the reset button, then flip the power switch off and back on. If that doesn't work, the hard reset is next.
And these things are like little specialized computers -- when they freeze they stay frozen until you reboot or reset them, so it will stay the way it is until you reset it. Again, the hard reset will delete all your books so you have to reload all f them to the reader. ![]() |

There are several levels of reset.
Last time I had an issue with my 650, Sony support had me hit the reset button, and they hit the power switch 3 or 5 times. Then there is the BIG reset, that clears everything. |

So I did something to reset it and I don't know exactly what I did but I have all my books and stuff. All I had to do was set the time, date, the dictionary. But thank goodness it worked! Thanks for all your help!

Make certain that the battery is charged. Preferable using a non-usb charger (barrel/round connector) Some usb cables and computers will actually drain your reader.
Then do the reset. Oops, I see you already got it. Great!! |

The 950 has only a mini-USB connector to charge with, but should come with a wall adapter you can plug in the cable to. If not, a blackberry or motorola droid charger will also work.

SF:
My 950 actually came with a wall charger and I'm not special in that regard. Others on mobileread have reported the same thing. Not to contradict you, however. Still others have reported only the USB cable came with theirs. |

I think Sony charges about $30 for one of those, so it's not an insignificant loss. (I know there are cheaper options, but if Sony wants to rip people off, that's the price I'm going to quote). Fortunately, I've got two others; I'd be seriously annoyed if I had gone weeks only being able to charge the 950 through a USB connection. If I don't get it by next week, they're getting another call. There's an essential dishonesty in this that puts me off. |
