Fujitsu unveil a next gen color epaper screen (with video)

http://www.the-digital-reader.com/20...r-screenvideo/

I want it ! No black flash when a new page is displayed !
No black flash is much better for the brain, as French scientists at Paris Jussieu university proved in their lab. The black flash breaks concentration, if not consciously, at least the unconscious feels the effect.

Have you got a link for this university study ?
I'm curious to find out more about this.

Did they compare it with the slightly longer dislocation when turning a page on a book, or just when there was an electronic page turn without a flash?

Likewise for a link to this "study" as personally I find absolutely no effect/problem from page turn and have heard of no similar study... number of participants and their usage/background etc would be of interest to validating this report...

It's difficult to tell from the video how well the resolution and contrast of this cholesteric LCD technology would compare to Pearl eInk screens for reading, but the colours are certainly a good step up in brightness and boldness.

Actually, it looked to me like it does have a black flash as it repaints the screen. It just does it in a band that rolls across, instead of the entire screen at once. The same technique could, I suspect, be used on B&W eink, too, and it is definiitely an improvement.

Not to me. That slow crawl across the screen is nerve wracking.

it was an extremely slow crawl and i found it really annoying when i last saw the displays a year ago. this is much faster. it also needed to scan 2 or 3 times(dont remember which) in order to re-draw full color. this looks like they actually have both scans running at nearly the same time, the second just line or two behind the first. its quite the improvement.

i think i still prefer liquavista and mirasol to CH-LCD

hmm the colors are the same as previous but they state that if they kept with the slower change they could actually have full color. 157dpi.

It's nice to see things going forward.
Although, IMO 4.096 colors is not enough for comics, photos, etc... They could display full colour if they lowered the writing speed but then the problem would be the writing speed itself. So for the foreseeable future, for comic reading I'd still go with a tablet.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s.
Comics back then had a limited color palette and it worked fine.

I'd be wary anytime a scientist tells you they have proven anything. For me at least, the black flash of earlier eink readers was a barrier to their use, but the increasing rates of refresh have of allowed me to ignore the flash and read on them. The refresh is indeed far quicker than turning a page.
