Sharing books with friends.

Well my gf got a Kobo Touch yesterday (from me ) and she signed up with a brand new kobo account. She bought a couple books and stuff, then I got the idea to hook it up to MY computer and load up Digital Editions to see if I could put my books onto her device. Well, it worked. She can read my Adobe DRM books even though the Kobo user account on her device isn't the same as mine. It does show that her Digital Editions authorization is my email address though, so I guess that is all you need.

It's a good way to share books with a friend

Yes, it's always been the case that you can share books between devices registered to the same ADE account. Be aware, though, that there is a limit on the number of activations - 6, I believe.

I have always thought ADE had 6 authorisations.
Would the 5/6 question be that you automatically use one of your authorisations on the computer and so there are 5 "left" for various ereaders?

http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/faq/ seems to imply 6 computers AND 6 devices.

I was advised by Adobe CS that it was 6 for Desktop/Lap Tops and 6 Mobile devices allowed at one time.

By the way if you ever hit the wall just call them and they can reset the count.

Also there is no such thing as unregistering a device from ADE unlike the Kindles. That is why you can use up all your counts if you end up with hardware replacements as well as OS re-installs.

I have 1 jetbook, 1 ALP, 3 Andriods running Kobo, Kobo and ADE on my 3 laptops and a real Kobo Touch all able to access the same ADE account.

I had my count setting reset once last year as I had several PC OS-re-installs and I had burnt up several Adobe ADE access lives doing FW updates on both the jetBook and Aluratek Libre Pro. Some of the earlier FW's wiped out the ADE authorization code that gets left on your device.

With the Kindle, though, it works a little differently. There's no limit to the number of devices that you can have registered to your account, only the number of devices that you can simultaneously have the same book downloaded onto. This is normally 6 devices. ie, you could have 10 devices registered to your account, and download a particular book to any 6 of them.

Better yet, ask around and find a friend in the area who can help you set up DRM removal.. Problem solved, and never have to call Adobe.

is it possible to share using an SD card as well? If i put Kobo books onto an SD card and then pass that SD card onto a friend can they read them? I'm not very technical so thought I'd ask the experts on here.

Only if the friend's reader is registered to the same ADE account.

So what happens when you exceed that number? I have had two wireless Kobos (returned my first one) and two Kobo touches (returned my first one). In addition, I had to do one factory reset on my first Kobo touch, which meant I had to re-activate it with ADE. That is a total of five activations. I was planning on getting one for my wife. Does that mean we will not be able to activate it?

You get in touch with Adobe customer support and get the activations reset.

I seem to recall that you automatically get a new activation every six months, or something like that. It's not a problem for most users.
