Where does the NC store BN content?
I bought a NC last weekend and I have a question about how the NC handles BN content. After registering, the NC, it downloaded about 4 books from my BN library and I manually downloaded the rest (about 45 all told) . When I hooked my NC to my computer via USB and I opened the B&N Downloads folder, there was nothing in it. I re-checked my books, and they work, though the settings said I had 100% of 1 GB memory available. I side loaded some books, and they work on the NC and show up when I access the NC via computer. The side loaded stuff also seems to count against my available memory. I've had a Nook WiFi for over a year and had a Sony 505 before that, so I'm not a newb. When I hook my Nook WiFi up to my computer, I can see all the content, side loaded or B&N purchased.
I tried calling B&N support, but I don't believe what I was told. I was told that the NC doesn't store anything purchased from B&N, and that my NC accesses my books from the server even when the Wifi is turned off. So here are my questions: Where does the NC store files downloaded from B&N? Am I supposed to be able to see that content on my computer? Basically, I'm trying to determine if there is something wrong with my NC, or if B&N is doing something screwy with file management. The NC does have the latest software and does seem to work fine in every other respect. |

There isn't anything mechanically wrong with your NC. B&N downloaded content is hidden.

TimW is correct, the B&N content goes to a partition of the internal storage that is not visible from the PC. If you need a copy of your books, you can download them from the B&N site.

Thanks for the help. I like to take a copy of the unit to save as a backup. I guess I'll just have to do it via the e-ink Nook.

You can download a copy of your books as a backup by installing Nook for PC. Nook for PC will download all your books to your PC, with a recognizable title.

You don't even need to install Nook for PC. You can log in to your account on B&N's web site and download copies there. Every time I buy a book from B&N, I get an email with a link to that page.

I downloaded "Nook for PC" and that worked fine.
The latest on my B&N tech support saga: On my fourth attempt at getting an answer from B&N, I got an e-mail from them saying that the NC doesn't hide files and that I should try a factory re-set. I wasn't upset that the two people at my local store didn't know, but it's sad that B&N's own tech support can't answer the question correctly. |

The primary reason they do this is that wireless downloads don't need Adobe DRM applied (since there's no way to pull this content off of the Nook), so they save on licensing fees they'd otherwise pay Adobe for the ability to create a portable ePub file. One of them shows 2 epub files in "/B&N Downloads/Books" and the other Nook Color shows no epubs. The one that shows the epubs says the NC has 5GB capacity, whereas the other one reports 1GB total (neither have memory cards) Why would that be. I'm using Win7-64... I thought that happened because the first NC made hardware settings (???) that prevented the second nook from reading the BN files... very puzzling. Last edited by Magnus; 06-28-2011 at 11:11 PM. |

You have one NC with the new partitioning, and one with older. In the older partitioning you can see the files as they are placed in the 5Gb partition. In the new partitioning, the downloaded files to go the 4Gb part that is no longer visible to the user. |

Wow. That stinks. Glad I got one of the 'older' models. I'm not using that space right now, but I probably will want to at some point. Grrrrr. |

You can set your device up with the old partitions using these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1094371
You will have <1GB space for B&N apps with the old-style partitions, but you will have more space for side-loaded content and you should have access to your B&N books and magazines over USB. |
