Bug with the Authors

Calibre started yesterday to crash on each change. I have already put over 7000 books in its database and had to tag them quick. So I have used the extract ISBN plugin which can be quite helpful although it's quite slow as well. After letting it work for about 40 hours to some 4500 books (mostly PDFs) I asked Calibre to start downloading metadata for all books listed under author unknown and with an ISBN. This took Calibre some 7 hours for 2000+ books, but when writing tags it crashed. I sure hope nothing was deleted as I run with no backup as I'm quite tight on disk space right now.

I repeated the operation, each time with less books and it crashes after it downloads the metadata. Now I have tried something else. Looking up in the main list and manually select which files to have their metadata downloaded. And it has worked. I also searched for "unknown". And it has worked. And I have searched for "author:unknown" and selected from that list which ones to have their metadata downloaded. In the end, my 0.8.7 portable calibre crashes only when the list is generated from authors than u than unknown. Strange, but it was redone.

There were crash issues with 8.7 on Windows that were fixed recently. I don't know if those fixes made it to the 'Portable' version.
Discard your old download and get a fresh download (the version # did not bump)

Hmm.. why not name it with an "a" at the end? Or as a "dot one"? Or whatever.

Anyway, the issue is still there.
