The eDGe has a dialer built-in. I have wondered what it does.

Are you running Dingo or Ermine on your Pocket eDGe? As I understand it, some people have gotten USB modems to work under Dingo, but I think no-one has under Ermine.

Good luck!

Before I can give a definitive answer I need to know more about what you want to do.

First off I am assuming you only have internet access via dial up.
Next the dial up modem is in a PC running win XP.
I assume that PC has a wired network interface either built in or via a plug in card. If so is the port a MID spec or a MID/MIDX? This determins the type of cable necessary.
Do you have the USB to Ethernet lan adapter?

If the PC doesn't have a network interface or you don't have the USB lan adapter then you are dead in the water at this time. Sorry.

If the modem is external to your PC, then there is a small possibility that a USB/COM adapter might allow you to see the modem but then there is the need of drivers which I don't think are available for Android. So no go again.

If you only want to connect your PE to the internet to get apps then you can download them to your PC and use an adapter to transfer them to a mini SD card and use that to transfer them over.

For anything else like registering with Adobe or updating then you need to find an open WiFi hot spot and use that. I would recommend that for updating because trying to pull down nearly 150 Mb over dial up is going to be a bit of a pain to say the least.

Here is an original enTourage page expalining how to use 3G USB modem with Dingo:

https://www.entourageedge.com/suppor...d=199&nav=0,22

But it seems Ermine doesn't support them: check archive of enTourage's forums.

It might be easier to use a Hawking router with dial-up support and a USB Ethernet adapter from StarTech than try to get a modem to work.

Sorry asdx we don't have cdma over here.

At the present state of play I think your chances of getting it to work directly are nil. On the other hand there might be a very small chance if there were linux drivers for it and someone is prepared to try and port said drivers to Android which is linux based.

There is a way of using it via your PC if you are prepared to go that route but it does require the USB to Ethernet adapter or a WiFi access point connected to the PC.

If you want to consider this let me know and I'll write a howto for you.

I wonder if an internet connection, acquired on a PC using this device can be "shared" TO a router?

It seems that Asdx would prefer to just use the device directly, to maintain portability, but since a lot of USB devices rely on the processor of the host device for much of their work, the driver could be pretty elaborate. It certainly wouldn't be supported by the eDGe out of the box, and Android-based software that communicates with hardware is often platform dependent.

I googled it and saw something about drivers. Also saw that this device is specific to India(?)

I stopped at that point figuring it was beynd my ken.

The answer to the first part is that it should be possible. I have a friend that has a notebook with win XP - the internal moden is used on dial up and he has a wireless AP on the lan port which connects the modem to his other wireless devices. XP has the capability of linking the modem and AP in bridge mode.

As you say, it would not be easy to get the the unit to connect directly to the edge but it might just be possible if a programmer is well versed in Android and is able to reverse engineer the parts that are relevant. Not a task that would be undertaken lightly. Even then there is no guarantee that it would work reliably.

Overall I would say that at the moment, no it can't be done.

They stopped selling it as they went out of business a few weeks ago, there are a lot of threads on why it happened, most people seem to agree that it was poor marketing of the device...
