NOOK Upgrade not for all ereadera

Barnes and Noble has a promotion now. You can bring in *****ANY*****
e reader and upgrade to a NOOK and get 30 free books.

The Barnes and Noble website says this exactly.
*******************************
Come in to any Barnes & Noble store and show us your old eReader. When you buy any NOOK, we'll give you 30 FREE books to start your NOOK library - a $315 value!
************************************

I went to a Barnes and Noble store to do just this. The first thing the staff does is look on a list. If your e reader is not on the list, they will not let you upgrade to a NOOK. They are targeting only certain e readers. The website is misleading.

So the offer is not just for any e reader, it must be on their list. The staff called Barnes and Noble service to determine that mine was not on the list.

So you be the judge. It seems that something is wrong.

According to the wording you posted here, you should argue that your reader qualifies and get the sd card and books. It is lame that only a selected set or readers qualify though.

It is fraud, and grounds for a class-action suit, if the website says "any ereader" and the store is only allowing some of them.

The advert says, "Offer applies to any other eReader brand. eReaders do not include mobile phones, laptops, or general purpose tablet computers. Limited time offer. While supplies last. In-store only.
The offer is good with purchase of All-New NOOK, NOOK Color or NOOK 1st Edition. NOOK Books are provided via SD Card and are only accessible on a NOOK device."

I did argue

I did argue. They said no. The upgrade only applies to their list. I saw the list and it had about 3 e readers on it.

The Barnes and Noble around me (NYC) was much more permeable.

I actually received my STR on June 8th... I got a regular and gift receipt because the Gift one has 60 (I think) days to return if I wanted to...

I brought my STR into the store today (July 1st), along with my Sony 950, and expected to ask very kindly and graciously if I could get in on this promotion (even though it obviously wasn't meant for me) , prepared to show them my 950 and gift receipt.

I asked one of the floor staff, and he walked over to a manager who said sure. I never even had to take out my 950.

EDIT: I went to the one on 86th and Lexington Ave, for anyone in NYC. I would call them beforehand to make sure the workers currently there are still willing to do this.

It sounds like the workers who denied you because of the reader list were really at their core being complete douchebags, because since there is no official record of which reader is shown when you walk in, they could just have personally decided to help, with no recourse.

Yes, but it doesn't say that. It says "Come in to any Barnes & Noble store and show us your old eReader. When you buy any NOOK, we'll give you 30 FREE books to start your NOOK library..." It doesn't use the word ANY to describe the ereader - it says "old ereader", not any ereader.

You can argue with this policy, but let's be accurate.

Edit: in small print it does say, "Offer applies to any other eReader brand. eReaders do not include mobile phones, laptops, or general purpose tablet computers." So it depends on what they mean by "ereader brand." It doesn't say ereader model. I think what they mean here is that it doesn't have to be a Barnes and Noble brand ereader. I think they have themselves covered, although it is pretty misleading.

The whole offer is rather lame anyway. The best part would probably be the free SD card. They give you 30 free eBooks, none of which you have a choice about. When Sony offered 50 free eBooks way back when (I think it was with the 505) you got to choose which eBooks from a list of hundreds and then download them yourself.

That is pretty lame, alright! Let's see - all the books by Jane Austin, all by Dickens...

My girlfriend is in NJ.

She just bought a Nook for me and got the free SD card with no hassle whatsoever (she showed the rep my old PRS505).

I've noticed that their ads for Nook promotions do tend to be on the vague side. Like the Angry Birds thing. The little blurb I got on my Nook Color said to come in and download it, because it was only in store. However, you have to sit there and play angry birds and it just shows up, apparently. Only thing was, never showed up for me.

Also had problem with the new cafe coupon..it shows up in the store at home. Yet, when I'm on wi-fi in store, the coupon disappears. I hadn't clicked on the coupon early either- the girl said it'll disappear if you do that. The girl behind the counter also said that's happened a few times.

While I like my Nook Color, I'm not impressed with the promotions. I think they're a little shady and meant to get you into the store.

I wish I had advice, but my store didn't even GET the SD cards and I didn't have anyone who came in on Saturday for them. I know we had a list the digital lead at my store wrote, but no idea how comprehensive.

My advice, as a totally low on the totem pole employee (and of course this does not represent B&N in any way): fight for it. It DOES say 'any' e-reader brand, and says so in store AND online. No mention of restrictions apply. I also have no idea WHY the Sony wouldn't qualify. The point is to get you to use the nook, not get you to abandon a specific brand. If you try again and get shot down, there's no point in calling the 1-800 number, this is a store promotion. Call the store and ask for the store manager. That doesn't work, try the district manager. Is it worth it? No, but that's not the point. There are no restrictions listed unless and employee calls to verify, and that's not right.
