does emailing to kindle 3 via wifi work or not in canada? web browsing on 3g?

Hi All,

I haven't received my kindle 3 wifi + 3g yet. It's in the mail...

I want to hear from my fellow canuks if the following two things are possible to do. Please do not quote the site or I read you could or I can't see why you couldn't. Ok I know I sound rude but I'm not trying to be :-)

I want to hear from someone who has tried it in Canada (not a us customer that came to canada not sure if that would make a difference).

Can you email a txt file to the name@free.amazon.ca and receive on your kindle by wifi without pluging in the usb and is there a cost. I'm not talking 3g hear either...

Also, does web browsing (ie lets say mobile weather network or a site like that) work in canada using the 3g or not assuming I know that I am in a 3g area? This way when I go camping, I can look up the weather once in a while. no more surprise hail storms...

Thanks in advance,
Sylvie

I have my k3 and I can do everything in Canada.
1. email my free.amazon.com email address and receive it on my K3 by wifi without incurring a charge. (receiving by the 3G does incur a charge but I didn't try it cause I'm cheap. I set my setting for personal doc charge to max of $0.00 just in case. When I am not in a wifi area it waits until I am to send it to me free on wifi.)
2. 3g web browsing works where available but slow and no extra charge.
3. order books from amazon at no extra cost by 3g.
4. change my country of origin to USA temporarily to get a free book that is not available to Canada for free. I got an email from them that said blablabla send proof that I'm USA but without recourse. I've since been able to order things as a Canadian and switch back and forth. I know this is shady but I think it's not fair :-)
5. Use calibre to upload news rss feeds to my k3 by wifi. I wake up in the morning to various news article :-) Some are built into calibre other I made myself. awesome!

Have fun,
Sylvie

Public WiFi

I've send personal docs to the free kindle email address of a Canadian kindle user. She was able to download the documents successfully when connected to wifi.

However, she is having issues connecting to public wifi. Not sure if it's a Canada issue or related to her specific device. Home wifi networks, both in Canada and US do not have this problem. She has tried at McD's and a coffee shop, and has not been able to connect. Any ideas?

WiFi hotspots are notoriously unmaintained. I've had no problems connecting to some while others are dead on the spot on any device I have. So not a Canadian thing...

Are others in the wifi hot spot connecting at that time? Some hotspots have limits as to the number of connections they have at one time. or the internet is so poor that they can handle only so much traffic.

Has she tried to manually select and connect to the network? Sometimes you have to rescan to find the network and then select it and click on connect. To do that go to menu, settings, view wifi settings, rescan, once the networks have refreshed select the network and click on connect.

Other than that I don't know what else she can try... If you still need help, look for wifi issues but definately not a canadian one.

PS: I had a US bought kindle and now have the international one (both vers 3 wifi/3g) and both have worked on wifi hotspots in Canada...
