Forum newbie; Kindle owner
Hi, forums! Please allow me to babble on for a bit, as I am oft wont to do.
![]() A little over a month ago I persuaded myself to finally buy a Kindle; my fiancée has had one for some time, and I convinced myself that I would read a lot more if I had one. I couldn't have been more right! I'm reading more than I have in years. The biggest reason for that is the portability of the device. It's not a lot of fun lugging around a copy of Cryptonomicon in addition to my giant laptop just so I can get a chapter or two in during lunch! The other major factor is the E-ink. I generally advocate anything in digital format, and tried reading e-books many times in PDF or other formats on my computer or Droid, but LCDs were just not designed for that kind of reading. I feel that it's even easier on the eyes than printed paper, especially with the options for changing fonts. I quickly found that my tastes have changed since high school. Several years ago, I still enjoyed reading fantasy novels (Robert Jordan, David Eddings, et al), and not much else. I did quite a lot of that for a [brief] period during which I had quit smoking and needed something else to do during my breaks at work. These days, while I haven't completely changed my mind about fantasy, I'm finding myself much more engrossed in mystery and suspense stories. I've rediscovered Sherlock Holmes, and most recently started reading Sue Grafton for the first time. My first Kindle purchase was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which I decided is overrated, but interesting enough that I'll continue the trilogy at some point. So, here I am, joining a forum for yet another hobby, hoping to run into people with similar tastes. Friends who read are few and far between for me these days, and my expectation is that this will be a good source of reviews and/or recommendations. In my other hobbies and interests, I'm a big fan of obscurity, so I'll gladly take a chance on something I've never heard of! I'm not even up to snuff on most of the popular stuff either, having been embarrassingly restricted to few genres in the past. Hope that wasn't too much rambling for a first post. Hello again to all, and happy reading! |
