Question Battery life between 3G and 3G + Wifi version

I'm about to get the kindle 3 and now choose between the two versions (sorry that it might be late for most of you here). However, the major consideration for me would be the battery life. Certainly I'm not expecting to have battery life of over a month as stated by Amazon under normal use but a long battery life for an ebook is definitely crucial.

My question is what's the battery consumption for wifi and 3G?
Can I turn 3G off manually (i know i can do it for wifi to save battery and turn on when necessary)? If not, does it mean the battery consumption is much larger for 3G since it's on all the time and looking for proper signal?

I love the 3G feature but also appreciate a long battery life, hope someone can advise.

You certainly can expect a battery life of over a month. I easily get that on my 3G Kindle. Yes, best idea is to only turn the radio on when you need it, which is simply done via a menu item.

When you are using 3G, the battery life is very weak (I get maybe three or four days). However, when you are using WiFi or nothing at all, the battery life is about the same for both Kindles. As HarryT says, only enable wireless when you need it (buying books).

You can either turn on or turn off wireless. Wireless includes both WiFi and 3G. The Kindle 3G automatically switches to 3G when it can't find any recognized WiFi access points.

Also, when you add a new book it will index it and that eats a lot of battery life. So if you are going on a long trip or something and can't charge it stock up on the books you know you're going to read and keep it charged while it indexes the books before you take it with you.

I think this author means keep it plugged in. I've found the best way to go when adding multiple books is to let the Kindle sit plugged in over-night while it indexes things.
