Smart Single Quotes (RTF)

I have a RTF file with smart single quotes.

When converting to either epub or mobi, Calibre turns them into letters e and f (like so):

eYes, yes,f Dominic said, with a dismissive wave. eAnyone else would have done the same. Say no more about it.f

Is there a way to get Calibre to recognize them as quote marks and convert them properly?

Try saving your rtf as html in word and convert that.

is there a way to smarten the punctuation in the case where the quotes appear as ['] to quotes that appear like this ["] (except, of course as the smartened 'curly-type')

No, not automatically. you can use smarten punctuation to make a single quote into a curly single quote but not a curly double quote

yeah, i knew that and figured there wasn't a way to do what i asked, but thought that asking couldn't hurt. thanks.

Use the REGEX in Sigil.
It will take 2-3 passes to avoid apostrophes, and apply the correct curl.
Search for <space>'
replace with: space "

second pass [^n]'<space> try and skip words like nutn'
replace with: "<space>

Third pass MANUAL REPLACE MODE
n'<space> check the exceptions of pass 2, Next or Replace as needed.

ok....please understand that i'm a sigil neophyte and the question arises....

HUH!?

....by which i mean that i cannot find anything called regex in sigil 4.....ah ha, 'regular expressions' that's what you're referring to. so set the find/replace function to use regular expressions & use your recomendations in several passes.

thanks, i'll try it/them next time i hit a document with those offensive single quotes.
