Light Required
Been a Sony PRS700 e-reader user for 2+ years now. Far as I know the only e-reader with a built in light. Only problem was the PRS700 was a failure for Sony (the e-ink screen was dismal due to the extra glass pane) and the only place I can find a replacement is on eBay. Is there any new e-readers out there with a built in light? It is the number 1 requirement for me due to my reading habits.

I think you will have to buy a case with a light or just a seperate light. The other option is go with something with an LCD like the Nook Color or iPad

Sounds like you should get a Nook Color or a Kindle 3 with the case that has a built in light.

Nook Color might just be the answer. Not as portable but 'doable'. Need to see one in the wild before choosing. I-Pad no way. Got the phone don't need big brother. Snap on lights, lighted covers, etc. just more to carry around and more to break. Least I'm on a quest now for a PRS700 replacement.

A backlit LCD screen is a very different beast from an eInk screen, and comes with its own issues: poor battery life, lack of visibility in bright light, and so on. A cover with a built-in light is, IMHO, the best of all worlds - it has no impact on the screen readability when not in use, and is always there when you do need it. I have a Kindle with the Amazon cover with a built-in light, and it's great.

I tried many types of reading lights and my K3 with the lighted cover beats them all. To say nothing of the convenience of not have yet another type of battery on hand.

And the fact that, when you fall asleep while reading (as I often do) the light automatically turns off when the Kindle suspends itself.

The kindle + kindle cover with build-in light is a great combination. It's a combination of booklight and ebook reader that actually works well.

I have the lighted cover for my Sony--not as integrated as the Kindle--it takes it's own battery (aaa), and doesn't automatically shut off when the Sony goes to sleep. But I really do like the cover--it does add a a bit of bulk to the reader, but not really that much--even with the lighted cover my Sony 650 is still smaller and lighter than my Nook Classic.
But, at least in the US, these covers are hard to come by now. Sony doesn't seem to be making them any more--so if you want one your best bet is probably e-Bay. I'm very glad I bought mine back when I bought my reader! |
