A choice between two budget readers?
Hi All
Well...I'm old and on a budget so I wanted to get opinions on which of two readers to get......Kobo is coming out with their new touch with wifi in a few days....for 129 bucks......Walmart has a deal on the sony pocket edition with a cover and light for 99 dollars..the bad news is it looks like its only the pink ereader.... One consideration for me is i really don't want to spend another 50 bucks to get a cover for the reader........I want something surdy..... As a newbie i'm lost.. Tom ![]() |

Is it the Sony Pocket Edition with the touchscreen (PRS-350) or without (300)? You could always put a skin on the reader if you don't like the colour.

I just checked the Walmart site, and the sale seems to be on the non-touch model, the PRS-300. It is a great device (it is very similar to my PRS-505, only smaller). You could check to see if they can order you a blue or silver version. It has no touchscreen and doesn't have wi-fi, and it has the older vizplex screen technology (whereas the Kobo has the newer Pearl screen with better contrast). It is still a great device if you are on a budget, and can take quite a few file types; I don't know about the 300, but my Sony PRS-505 is built like a tank, and has a great aluminum casing; I think the 300 has that same casing. If you factor in the cover, you will be saving around $50 (from what I have seen, the Kobo covers sell for between 20-35 dollars, and I haven't yet seen a lighted cover for the Kobo). Both are great e-book readers, and I think that you would be happy with either. While the Kobo offers more features, you would be saving a fair bit of money with the Sony, so in my mind both are great purchases.
I hope I have managed to help you a bit, and not confuse you. |

You can also pick up the new Sony pocket edition (with the better contrast touch screen and integrated dictionaries) at Best Buy for $109, which is a great price.

Tom, some of us here like the jetBook Lite, going this week for $89.99 (or an open box item for $64.99).

Tom,
You mentioned covers. Regardless of what e reader you buy there are plenty available for around $10 delivered. The missus and I have one each, they are not flash, but do the job of protecting the reader. |

The Sony PRS-350 is a really solid buy.
Great build quality and software, lots of accessories for it and it provides a really decent reading experience. I'd be a bit wary of getting a jetbook due to the LCD, but there's split preferences on this forum, so go after your taste. |

You can also consider the new Nook Simple Touch at $139. I suggest going to a store to demo whatever you buy though, to get a feel for weight and features. It sounds silly, but when you are going to be holding it for hours, every tenth of an ounce matters. As does being able to look at it in different light sources/angles.

If you are on a budget, you might want to make sure whichever reader you choose has access to library books. While there are PLENTY of free books to read, sometimes that's not what I want to read. Library access increases my choices. I've bought a handful of books, but most of what I read is from my library. If your library uses Overdrive, their list of supported readers is here.
