iPad2 or wait for Samsung 10.1

Hi all,

Having some material (bridge ePubs, PDFs and some CHMs I'd convert) that have pictures and colour-oriented material, I've decided my Kindle3 needs a companion.

I'm rather iPad-averse due to censorship, no Flash and crummy camera. But I'm worried that my anticipated Android option, the Samsung 10.1 is going to have an interface issue down the line. It's also reputed to have an inferior camera. I should also mention I don't take many pictures and a 2MP is the only camera in the house. And that I don't have a cell phone of any sort and won't be getting one this century.

Basically, I'd be using the tablet mainly with calibre-transferred material. So, the question I'm asking, given that parameter, which would you recommend? And why?

Thanks in advance for your words of experience and wisdom.
GM

PS: If you the slightest bit interested in Bridge (and I already know you are interested in ebooks), check out http://www.ebooksbridge.com/www/ebb/

I have a 1st gen ipad, so it has no camera. I don't feel the need to get one with a camera, I wouldn't use it anyway. The lack of flash has caught me once or twice, but really I didn't *have* to use it right at that time anyway, and used my pc. The images from my scientific academic texts are stunning. The screen display leaves nothing lacking and I can zoom in to the minutest detail. I love my ipad, even though I'm not fond of apple, and can honestly recommend one. I transfer titles from calibre through itunes, and have had no complaints about that process either.

If you want to make notes in your titles, there are some great pdf annotating apps that are perfect for that function.

I can't answer for the Samsung, but the calibre would work well for what you want.

Hope that helps a bit.

I had a Notion Ink Adam (Android 10" tablet) and was dissatisfied with it for various reasons. I sold it and got the iPad 2. I'm also adverse to Apple products but have really enjoyed the iPad. I use it mostly for reading but some games, email & internet. And I like it for the Weather Channel app, not that we're in the thunderstorm/tornado season. Oh, and I have 4 eink readers and a NookColor reader too.

The only thing I've used the cameras for is Facetime (Apple's video phone app). There is another video phone app called Tango that works with both Apple & Android. Tango is not as slick as Facetime but allows you to have voice only, voice one way & video the other way, or video both ways. Facetime is video both ways only.

Apples apps seem to be more expensive and their market is a little harder to navigate but also has a much larger set of apps. I have a Vulkano DVR and can transfer recorded video to my iPad or watch live TV through my home wireless network to the Vulkano. Also I really like the AirDisplay app on the iPad. It allows me to use the iPad as an expansion of my Windows PC's desktop via my wifi.

So, I guess my bottom line is to go with the iPad 2.

This thread really belongs in one of the other (hardware based) forums as it doesn't have anything at all to do with Calibre. I know you mentioned "transferring books with Calibre" but in reality Calibre has very little to do with the choice of device.

Kiwidude,

As the main reason I'm getting the tablet will be for use with content transferred via calibre, I'm not repentent for starting the thread. That said, I bow to the dictates of those that know and will consent to movement. (if I had to give consent in the first place).

I've waffled so often on this choice, any input is helpful pushing me to one side or the other. For instance, the Adam WAS on my list of choices. Now it's not.

Thanks to all who participated, GM
