No TIFFs. Why?

Sony ereader views JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, but not TIFF. I am crushed.

I'm not sure any reader shows .tiff files (possibly BeBooks just from Google?). Most of us though prefer to save space on the reader though and convert all images to .jpg for that reason.

If your question was serious, TIFF is a graphical file format. Many high-end digital cameras, for example, have the option of storing "raw" images in TIFF format. Unlike JPEG, it's a "lossless" compression format, so no information is thrown away.

Eh, if I were creating a reader, I wouldn't support TIFF. It's more of a professional format, for storing and manipulating an original hi-res file, not viewing on a little screen. There's no reason to have such a large file embedded in your book. All of the other formats you mention are compressed files.

@Hermes, I must agree with the above as well. TIFF, as I recall is controlled by Adobe [?] and I don't think has been updated in quite some time.

Not sure an eInk reader [or any pure, non LCD ereader] really needs TIFF support. The size issues mentioned by elemenoP and HarryT won't really make a hugely positive visual impact on screens like eink, I would think.

Far better IMO to opt for quality lossy files instead. Even BMPs are wasteful for most uses.

Is there any particular reason you require/wish for TIFF support from the Sony stuff? There are a ton of utils to convert TIFFs to HQ lossy formats.

Yes, it's owned by Adobe. It's also a highly flexible format with numerous options; I imagine it would be difficult to implement in the restricted memory environment of an eBook reader.

And, at the end of the day, what would be the point? Nobody's going to be able to tell the difference between a JPEG and a TIFF image on an eInk screen.

TIFF images can be lossy. The TIFF format is very flexible in what data it can contain. The TIFF standard is open to anyone to implement, and it wouldn't be hard to include the open source libtiff on the devices. However, the flexibility comes at the cost of complexity, so maybe Sony didn't think it was worth the hassle for a not-very-popular format.

The OP banged out about six threads in less than an hour, the last one stating that he had already returned his device for a refund. It feels like we're being trolled.
