Thumbs up almost a new e- reader person!

Greetings from Eastern Canada. My wife and I are in the process of acquiring an e-book reader for each ,she will be using a Kobo as my Daughter has a new one on order, and I have a Nook Color enroute as I am typing this. My Daughter suggested i should download Calibre and I have done so ,now I am wondering how it is going to work as it asked what e-reader I had and I clicked on Kobo and in fact I will have my Nook before my wife gets her hands on the Kobo. I guess time will tell, Has anyone else had this same issue.

We are both anxiously awaiting our hands on experience with our new readers and really looking forward to the experience.

Cheers.

Gardner.

Here is a short tutorial that you will need to know in order to deal with your two electronic readers, I have made this a simple as possible so if its a tad insulting please bare with me. All the books that you buy and/or download will be in one of several formats, most likely will be either PDF or epub format. Most electronic readers support both formats. PDF can and almost always contains what is referred to as DRM (Digital Rights Management) the determins which readers you can read the book on, when you obtain the books from Barns and Nobels the books will have DRM that will only allow you to read on a Nook (Nook Color or Simple Touch readers included), your Kobo will not read the books. However, if you obtain the books in epub format they should be readable by both your Nook and Kobo. Most electronic stores that you find on the internet will have epub books, and you probably should standardize on the epub format. The Kobo will be the simplier of the two to learn to use so you and your family should start learning to use the reader with that one then move to the Nook. Another strategy is to start the Nook with your daughter while mom and dad start with the kobo then trade when you get the hang of it (my neighbors son is more adept with technology then either of his parents are, as is the case with most kids) In the real world I am a network administrator so not being adept with technology is simply not an option with me. Start learning by uploading your books to the Kobo and Nook, sometimes called Side Loading then use the wireless option, called wifi.

As far as the Calibre goes look further for a small software program that fits inside the Calibre software (called a plug in) that removes DRM (called striping), download this and install it. In order of importance I think you should learn to first, strip DRM as it will be your major stumbling block, then second translate between different formats, this will not be as big a stumbling block as the DRM will be but will be great to know, and last library management, calibre's pimary job will be to manage all of those books that your family reads and keep track of them all.

Good to have your company, Gardner. You and your wife should have no problem with Calibre and different devices. If necessary, you can keep your Calibre Library on two different machines. Check the Calibre-dedicated sub forum here. Luck and very best wishes. Neil

Thanks for the kind words of welcome to the site.

I appreciate the welcome. and am now starting to have questions re my new Nook color I wanted to download some pictures and instead of a single picture ended up with a file with several similar shots. How do I delete them, also after I have read a book I would also like to delete it as the chances I would ever want to repeat read is slim to none I have looked at the info that came with the Nook and cant seem to find a reference to book or picture removal. I am sure it must be an option that I am not familiar with ,there sure is no right click available. lol

enjoy the weekend,

Gardner

Gardner, welcome indeed and congratulations! MR is an awesome place.

ProTip: Going forward, try to post your questions in the correct ereader subforums. You will get much better/quicker responses as people tend to monitor the subforums for the devices that they own.

cheers and enjoy!
