The future for Edge owners
I am one of the presumably many who just got an Edge on Woot! only to learn here that the device is being discontinued.
It seems that Entourage have an opportunity here to do right by those who have bought these devices, by open sourcing all the code (I know some is due to GPL, but I assume that much isn't). I would hope that by doing so the community could step in and maintain the software, and hopefully support future releases of Android as well. In the process Entourage could ensure the goodwill of their current user base and advocates. OTOH if Entourage just drops everyone at this point then I think they will have a PR issue on their hands. Would you buy a Slate from such a company? |

Hi Geekraver!
I seriously doubt enTourage will just drop everyone. They have been trying their hardest (as far as I can tell) to provide what resources they can with a dwindling number of employees. The "discontinued" rumor has not been officially confirmed. You are not the first to suggest they release the SDK (is that the right terminology??), and I'm sure you won't be the last. Maybe they will, one day. Maybe they will also issue a final release of Ermine before they close up shop and/or go on to the next hardware format. I started lurking in this forum in November, and there have been rumors and supposition for all that time. Every once in a while, an employee (of enTourage) will post to tell this community something, but now that they are down to a skeleton crew (and probably extra busy right now if Wooters are having problems), I doubt anyone official has time to comment on the latest rumors. Basically, it's not over until it's over. Enjoy your device! ![]() |

It's not just the SDK that geekraver is asking for.
for example, if the eDGe library application was open sourced, I could then add reading in the calibre metadata directly into that library instead of adding another application to the eDGe (Bibliotheca). |

You are correct - I am hoping that they would release enough that someone skillful in the art could create updates to future Android releases. Obviously there will be some software that this is not possible with due to licensing (Adobe comes to mind) but there are alternatives for that.
