Just Got my Pocket Edge
Ok, I just got my Pocket Edge last night, ordered through Amazon as I had a lot of credit there.
First impressions, FAST compared to my Archos 5 IT. The icons are huge, but I use an App called Multicon that alows me to put 4 app icons in the place of one, so no problem there. I love the size and weight. Very comfortable. My upgrading to 1.13 took maybe 7-8 min, very nice. The Reader side locked up after the upgrades, but a reboot resolved the problem. I was easily able to add apps from my 5 IT though the use of the microSD card and am going to try the USB connection today. Books, music and avi movies of 1.5GB all run flawlessly. If Entourage is asking for unsolicited TV ads, email me... I got it out of the box, charged it, and was running on WiFi, reading new books and watching fils in under a hour after the charging period (which was 3.5 hrs). Of course, I'd been using Android 1.6 for a year, so no big whoop, but if you have used Android and have looked at this, it is great. The speed is remarkable compared to my 600MHz Archos. I am old school though and did print the manual... BTW the boot up time is the same as for the Archos 5 IT. It just seems to be an Android issue, but it is MUCH faster than my Windoes Mobile device. I have read through the Forum but still have questions that either I can't find answers to or I misded understanding: 1. I love the ability to add links to my PDF books. Why can't I do that in Journal? Apologies to anyone who thinks asking questions is wrong. i did read the forum, really, and I recommend Multicon, Advanced Task Killer, Aldiko, Kindle for Android, App Monster, Astro Pro, BatteryLevel, Android comic Viewer or Perfect Viewer for CBZ and CBR, and Thinking Space, all of which seem to be running well on my Edge in full screen using 1.13.
2. Is anyone successfully using a notes application that allows for image insertion, link insertion, connection to calendar, in short, acts like MS OneNote? That allows for handwriting as well as USB keyboard entry? 3. Easy WiFi connection, am ordering the ethernet connector today. Anyone have a good reason to NOT do so? 4. My Archos 5IT (android) has a 500Gb drive with all my movies and music loaded on. Is anyone aware of an app that would aloow me to connect to it via secure BT or WiFi and stream the files to the Pocket Edge saving me storage space? 5. The onlyureal issue is the Sandisk 16Gb microSD II card I got from Amazon. Copying files to it through USB is sooooo slow. It looks like this could be the bottleneck of my file transfers, so I am going to try using USB exclusively. 6. I saw a forum note on exporting the file structuire to a 32Gb card and the provisos re the fact that THE CARD is now in control. Whar happens with the 3Gb left on the Pocket Edge? How is it used if the CARD is now the file system? Has anyone had a disaster occur doing this? Has anyone done it and found it to be a great idea? |

RE #1: enTourage hasn't implemented it. They actually simply adapted the existing open source Xournal app by all appearances and that code doesn't support attachments. However, they could in theory add it, but possibly only with significant effort.
RE #4: Try the "Bluetooth File Transfer" app (http://www.slideme.org/en/applicatio...-file-transfer). RE #6: Generally it seems to be okay, but I have seen one or two people have a problem with doing the transfer and needed assistance of Tech Support to resolve the problems. Be sure to have a backup of all your Library contents before doing it. Note that it is not reversible without doing a Factory Reset. |

Boris,
Thanks for help with 1, 4 and 6. Do you use Journal or another application? If you do, does the application work with reader? I have heard that BI Notes is good, but I'd like it to display in both LCD and the Reader so I can use inside and out. I will check out the Blutetooth File Transfer you recommended, thanks. I understand that it requires ROOT access. Can this be done easily and sfetly with Edge? Last edited by STL Droid; 03-01-2011 at 04:21 PM. Reason: added question |

I use the Journal primarily, although I also installed MaplePaint from the enTourage app store (it's essentially a colour version of Journal and runs on the LCD side). Only 2 apps work on the Reader side - the eBook reader and Journal. Any other app you install is limited to the LCD side and has no interactions with the Reader side.
As for the Bluetooth File Transer app, I'm not sure it requires root access. I've also used the ES File Explorer that has BlueTooth transfer capabilities. The limited BT file transfer stuff I've tried didn't require root access... If you're considering rooting your eDGe, be advised that you may void your warranty & support, and possible be unable to get upgrades. Of course, it may all be just fine, but it's a risk you take. |

Nope, nope, nope
No rooting around with the Edge, too new for me to be playing with the warranty I looked up Bluetooth FTP and only requires root if you want to connect to other people. If you have your devices with the program on them both, then you should be able to access files w/o root access, per what i read. may not get to till this weekend,. but I'll follow up on the experiment. Thanks again |

STL Droid,
Thank you for your recommendations. I was going to look for utility apps, especially a task killer, but decided to read your post first, and voila! You told me what I wanted to know, and asked some very good questions as well. ![]() I got my PE last week but have not gotten as far with it as you have with yours. I, too, had to do a reboot soon after startup, but for me it was the LCD that locked up. No problems since. |
