Android 2.2
Hello all,
I would like to build a 2.2 rom for the edge, but given my limited understanding of kernels and source codes, i have come here to ask for assistance! What I have: full copy of my current edge safely burned onto a disk for safe keepings a computer running the latest ubuntu with: android sdk (all) JDE and JDK 5 and 6 eclipse a copy of the Dingo source code which was posted yesterday What I want: 2.2 android for flash support (NPR.org is my must-have flash site ><) What I was planning:Speed increase better battery life I have been reading around, and see a couple options: 1. create my own update.zip 2. flash over the system and data with custom files The problems I see: 1. Update.zip - the update folder is a compilation of many little folders, including 2 system folders. I assume system1 is the eink system and system2 is the android, but from my edge's file structure it looks like they both combine into one system structure during update. My problem, I don't have a complete grasp of the update.sh file. But my guess is change system2 to contain framework and core of 2.2 and then change update.sh to make sure all the components are part of the update(that is, 2.2 and ee UI eink programming) Am i anywhere close on this? 2. Flashing- From what I have read, this seems the easiest way to brick a system. But potentially this could also be the easiest to update the folders and files required for 2.2. Possibly as easy as entering debug password, hooking up usb, and entering "./adb sync" (if i set up the proper android source on my workstation). I worry that because of the "gimped" adb bridge (jcase mrspaceman and robot speak of this) flashing this way wont be possible either. again, is this a workable understanding? This project has kind of become all-consuming for me, so i'll probably start testing these methods soon and hope for no brick. But before i take the jump, I decided to look for input here ![]() thanks all! ![]() |

(Just a note: enTourage is bringing Froyo (Android 2.2) to the eDGe in the next 3 months.)

I find it disappointing that entourage keeps putting off the Android 2.2.

BNA, I suggest you to repack update.zip as more safety way to update device (boot and recovery in EE seems different from other android devices, so you need to be carefull, but update.zip look safely (at least unless you scewup uboot). boot.zip --> zImage is a kernell which need to be updated. Systems.zip (1,2) contain both android framework, propriatetive drivers and eink software.., so you'll need to merge it to enable eink and wifi.

p.s. also I suggest you to use http://www.google.ru/url?sa=t&source...ZFuLzw&cad=rja DS-5 ARM (eclipse based) for debugging if necessary

FYI in 3 months froyo will be not be the current release of android, Gingerbread is set to be released this year.
The eDGe will not support flash, for a few reasons (arch incompatibility). |

Jcase, does this mean that Entourage is going to skip Froyo and go straight for Gingerbread? Been doing a lot of study and Google suggest strongly that Froyo isn't made for tablets. Even though it would be a dream if Entourage would, but it depends solely on their relationship with Google.

Interesting comment that "Google suggest strongly that Froyo isnt made for tablets". A number of tablets have recently been announced (Samsung Galaxy for one) and they are advertising that they will run Android 2.2. The Dell Streak 5" tablet is running Android 1.6 like the eDGe.

Here are some articles saying it.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/20526...html?tk=hp_pop http://www.informationweek.com/news/...ubSection=News http://www.i4u.com/39131/google-andr...imised-tablets This doesn't mean that it can't be done, but it's something that Google didn't plan Froyo to be used for. If this be the case, shouldn't Entourage focus more on Gingerbread since this is Google's O.S. of choice to be used on tablets? |

Thanks for the references. Interesting stuff. But i suspect that Froyo (2.2) is not going to be worse on a tablet than 1.6 (i.e. eDGe), and 2.2 does have the speed and battery life advantages, so 2.2 will probably be a welcome upgrade for us. Then, when 3.0 is available and optimized for tablets, we'll really be sailing along. Interesting how the articles mention that tablets cant access the store and what a liability that is. Don't we know it!!!!

Motorola, like many others with all their might and muscle (and simple phones), are still only now rolling out Android 2.2: http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/21/m...ting-tomorrow/. enTourage may be a couple of months more, but if multi-billion dollar international companies couldn't do it 3-4 months ago, then it's not reasonable to expect enTourage to be any quicker (especially when they've been busy with the big feature updates in Coyote and Dingo).
