I am an Android developer (in my spare time) and have now (finally) got my hands on the awesome eDGe.
I am currently working on getting my apps ready to submit to the entourage app store, and would like some suggestions from users as to what apps they would like to see. so please let me know what apps you would like and I'll see if we can create them. andy. 02 Aug 2010 update :just for clarification: I am not looking to charge for the apps I write, all of them will be open source. you can see my current Android projects here : http://andy.aspellclark.org.uk/ Last edited by mrspaceman; 08-02-2010 at 05:46 AM. |

Hello Mrspaceman,
Maybe it's possible to make a virtual printer for pdf or epub so we can convert email and doc files to pdf (epub) and read / annonate on the e-ink side. Tis, Jos |

I'm probably a niche within a niche market here, but the apps I'd like to see would be:
Mathematical plotting - you can do this using the Droid48 calculator emulator, but the result is in black and white and small. It would be nice to be able to do it in color and take advantage of the larger screen (and be able to save the plots, which Droid48 doesn't allow). LaTeX compiler - this is open source so you probably couldn't charge for it, but it would be nice to be able to alter LaTeX documents on the Edge rather than having to use my laptop, as most of the stuff I'm looking at on the ereader side is PDFs generated (and regenerated...and regenerated again...and...) from LaTeX. Screenshot capability - this would solve the above problem of not being able to save graphics. Image editing - Sketcher is decent, but doesn't have all the tools I would like, probably since it's designed for a much smaller screen where such an app would be useless. What kind of image editing are you looking for? There is Picsay for photo edit and Magic Doodle is a great drawing app.

Something with the capabilities of MS Paint, especially being able to cut and paste portions of images, fill shapes with color, etc. My particular application is to produce geometrical drawings for homework solutions and online notes I post for various calculus classes I teach. Currently I have to either draw and scan or, if it's very simple, do it in Paint...so I figure since I have a touchpad & stylus now, I should be using that instead.

I'm don't know if this is possible, but I'd really like to see the Android equivalent of PC Phone Home. An app that would let the eDGe send an email, GPS coordinates, or other location info to its owner in the event it's lost or stolen would be fantastic.

I would like to see an easy way to sync the journal notes with Evernote. There is even an API available at Evernote's website. This would provide access to the notes from everywhere as well as handwritting recognition.
Also perhaps you can talk to robot who is doing some really amazing stuff trying to run any app on the eink side. I know he had been looking for help from an experience android developer. |

And I would like to see the same integration as the evernote-windows client. So real notes/journal sync, not the pdf export kind of sync that other apps offer. |

There is nothing in GPL (the typical open source license) that requires you hand out the source code to everyone who asks, or prohibits you from charging money for the software you spent your time to develop. You merely have to provide a copy of the source for anyone who *purchases* the software. As far as I'm concerned, if software is good enough to be worth running, then it is worth paying (something) for the privilege. The Android store concept is ideal for this since it makes software affordable and accessible to a large audience and provides you compensation for your hard work. (Now, if only Google would open the market to non-phone devices.) So, don't be shy about asking for the $1.99 (give or take) ![]() Last edited by kenjennings; 08-02-2010 at 04:55 PM. |

Ken- You're right about the GPL, of course, except that the person you give the source to is then free (as in freedom) to redistribute the source code according to the GPL, which can effectively make it free (as in beer).
