Thumbs up There are days.....

.....when I want to hit the Google people in the head with a shovel.

And then there are days when i want to send them flowers.

At I/O yesterday, i had the joy of the tethering my HTC Android mobile phone to my eDGe via the native application in Android 2.2 (Froyo, for those in dessert mode)

Yep, that's right, Android 2.2 allows your Android mobile phone to become a wi-fi hotspot. No cables, no hassle, encryption....It;s just simply brilliant.

This will be a major feature upgrade for eDGe users, no more tethering application, searching for open wi-fi....just fire up your mobile and connect at 3G speeds.

Well Done Googs.

the usb modem drivers are not implemented for Android, so will be no luck. WIFIROUTER works with # Samsung i8000 Omnia II and is creating a proper WIFI network not adhoc. Make sure you set a Wep password and works. it works with my DX900 or wiffie Imate 8502 absolutely fine. Please lobby for my UK guru status....

mine works fine. does it has to do with wifi frequencies here in europe? have you manually tried to input the ssid? also try wifi buddy is better than wifi settings from edge!

Android 2.2 itself will be a great upgrade. And, for those of us without an Android 2.2 phone, MyFi is available today and gives you a simple 3G connection for your eDGe, and any other devices. Admittedly, it means you have to carry 3 devices instead of just 2.

I would be courious to see if the modem module could be added to existing Edges once released?

@borisb did you manage to get adhoc connections working? I got wireless tethering working on my android phone, but my edge just isn't seeing the network.

Wow, that was a quick reply! Thanks

I really hope this is something that will be included in the next update. I bought my eDGe on the basis that i would be able to tether it to my phone...

Apparently the ad-hoc network issue is not just confined to the eDGe. Looks like Android 1.6 does not support ad-hoc connections.

More detail here
