Should I Root right away, or give the stock setup a try?
Getting an ASUS Transformer Tablet 32GB in by the 8th. Just the tablet
the keyboard/dock is not in stock at Newegg. I've been reading up on "rooting" and it looks similar to things I've done with my PDA/GPS, xda dev is even the same great source for the process. I think it well be not that much of a problem, given all the info and instructions available. But it appears that there is or has been an issue with how the "official" updates are issued and at what point you do the rooting. (I hope that makes sense, I am new at this.) In any case I was wondering if anyone knows if there is any reason not to give the stock rom and setup a good try before rooting? Luck; Ken |

You should probably see how the stock unit feels before rooting. Your natural inclination to rip into it will get the upper hand soon enough. While looking into tablets, I came to the same conclusion you did and selected the "Transformer", but decided to buy a Coby 7024 to get my feet wet and wait for the second round of high powered tablets to get serious. Regards - John P.S. Don't forget to post your take on the "Transformer" and, in particular, the Android OS. Others have done so, but I would like to have your thoughts. |

What's gained by rooting? The only reason I rooted my Nook Color was to gain access to Android Market (and now Amazon Appstore). If the initial release of the NC included Android Market, I never would have rooted.

You mean besides the whole idea of keeping control of the machine? No to Skynet!!
Remember the Forbin Project! Well, there are programs that you can't run on a machine without root authority, it's a Linux thing. Of course it could never be that I can't leave good enough alone, no not me.. You may have a point though as it could be that I can get all I want without ever rooting the device. Part of the reason I started this thread. Luck; Ken |

Who are you kidding? I suspect you'll want to play around with rooting and alternate firmwares. I'm pretty sure Roebeet from slatedroid and here is one of the main tinkerers over on XDA. He was pretty much the king of the Pandigital Novel and you can trust his work and advice.
My advice is based on using that device from the other end of the spectrum. I certainly got a kick out of playing around flashing all the different stuff for my PDN, even though it didn't end up really adding anything useful to me and took a lot of time (and fried one microSD card from all the flashing). In the end I just use if for a bedtime reader (and love it) and could have done so as it came. So, sure, there may not really be any reason to tinker and you probably ought to see if it meets your needs as is. But I suspect you'll end up playing around under the hood (and doubt you'll regret it). |

Hmm... Perhaps you guys are getting to know my proclivities, a little too well.
I guess posting a picture of my Eee Pad with its cover off, is less likely to get me in trouble, than some things that people post. I do suspect that in the end I can come up with a rationalization that makes it worthwhile to make the Eee Pad a more versatile gadget. Luck; Ken |
