KF Media announces Dito

KF Media announced this morning that they plan to roll out a whole new e-book ecosystem. They plan a dedicated e-bookstore with books in Swedish and English, a new app and you will be able to buy tablets and e-readers in the store.
And they plan to let you buy e-books in the store, loaded onto cards ( Not sure how it will work)

Dito.se also plan to sell tablets and e-readers from Samsung ( 8.9 inches), Dell( 7 inch) and Sony (6 inch) with Dito pre-installed. I suppose that means Dito will replace the Sony Store in Sweden.
Anyway. I am happy. I really look forward to the prices on the English books.
( But what I really want to know if they have fixed so that e-books give you Medmera points)
More info here ( in Swedish)

That's cool. What other options do you have for ebooks in Sweden?

The library, and most of the major bookstores have e-books, but this is the first time one of the major chains launches a dedicated e-bookstore.

It's always good to see growth in ebook options. Do you have a large selection for library ebooks?

Um. Right now I think it is 5400 books. At the moment, a majority of the e-books is available to the library at the same time as they are available in stores.
I think that is changing, though. The libraries cannot afford it, and the publishers don't like it .

That's a shame. Going in the wrong direction is not good.

How are your libraries organized in Sweden? Here in the US, they're generally run by local governments; usually city or county. Occasionally, smaller library systems will join together to increase buying power for ebooks.

Actually, out here in small towns they are often run by a local board not connected to government. Usually these were founded by a well to do bibliophile and the local government does not want to take on an ongoing fiscal commitment. The town government did, however, help us get our bid filed right when we bought the old post office building and moved into it six years ago.

This is big news. It will be very interesting to see what happens especially since Kobo is planning to launch in Sweden as well by the beginning of 2012 http://www.svb.se/nyheter/kobo-lanseras-i-sverige (In Swedish).

Public libraries are usually funded by the local county (Kommunen). Privatly funded a libraries isn't the rule but is sometimes done by book loving locals :-) , often when the government funded library has had to shut down. Unfortunately there was a wave of closed libraries during the crisis of the 90's and times haven't been good since. Mobile library routes are often used as a way to try to cover such areas but unfortunately it's often not enough. Also donations don't really play a part in our budget since we don't have tax cuts for donations they way they do in the US.

Sweden is also divided in larger regions called Län and the Länlibrarians work from the regional centers helping the smaller regional libraries with everything from Interlibrary loan to various literary projects.
