media partition gone?
hi folks,
i know starting the first post with a problem isn't always the best thing to do, but ... i got my hands on a used faulty kindle dx (b005). ;-) it seems that the kindle can't recognize the media partition anymore. he only comes up with the buildt in dictionary?? if the kindle is connected via usb, the media partition is normally accessible, both folders (documents & music) are there and i can copy stuff on it ... but still the content isn't shown on the kindle! my next thought was to update the kindle from 2.5.3 to 2.5.8: same problem; the update option is always grayed out ;-( probably, because of the missing media partition. while the menu button is pressed, he is trying to tell me that there are only 43 mb free! what happened to the rest? so i tried the factory setting as well the recovery mode, but nothing helps... i would be glad to get some ideas from you ;-) ![]() Last edited by steinhold; 05-27-2011 at 09:57 AM. |

I assume you are using Windows, can you run check disk on it? Opem "My Computer" and right click on the Kindle then select properties. Under the tools tab you can check for errors. This might be able to fix it or give you an idea of whatis wrong.

When you used the recovery menu what did you do?
This may help... http://www.mobileread.mobi/forums/sh...d.php?t=113362 If it were my Kindle I would try formatting it using FAT32. If you have Windows 7 I would use a 3rd party app to format it. I've had some problems with the way Win 7 formats FAT32. Then go into the recovery menu and then initialize the partition. Do this are your own risk, but since it already doesnt work what do you really have to lose? |

Not sure what you mean by "media partition". As far as I know, there are just 3 folders, documents, Audible, and music. They are just folders, not partitions. Unless you are talking about some of the hidden system stuff.
I assume that you have books in the documents folder that are an appropriate file type, and appropriate DRM for that particular Kindle, if any. If you put a plain .txt file in the documents folder, does it show up on the Home Page? |
