Sudden big slowdown in page turn time
In the more than a year I've used the 500, the page-turn speed is normal, about 1-2 seconds. Several months ago I was in the middle of "The Road" when the turn time increased dramatically, to 4-5 seconds. I finally went from Large size in the landscape position to Large in portrait, and it was somewhat better, and finally finished it.
I have now started on "World Without End" by Ken Follett, which has 5082 pages in the large size. It was behaving as usual until I got up to around page 800 when it began to slow down. now it is also taking 4-5 seconds to turn a page. I have to hit the button three lines from the end to get it turned by the time I finish. This is only the second book out of scores I have read to do this. Any idea at all what causes this? And if anything can be done? My first thought was that it was something goofy when the publisher made it digital, but if were the case, why would it only start after 800 pages. This is really annoying, and if it gets worse, will never get through the book. It is also a little better in the portrait mode, but the type is too small for my bad eyes. |

Hmmm. What format are you using? I had a similar experience with PDF files that I created using some shareware tool. It turned out that these PDF files were highly inefficient thus slowing down the slow CPU of the Reader. The same PDF files created through Latex or using Adobe Acrobat were fast from the first page to the last.

![]() Anyway, I finally got through to Sony support. They had me try several things, including a reset with power on, checking other books for speed (which I'd already done and they are fine), and going back to the beginning of this book. Oddly enough, when going back to the start, it is the normal speed, and only when get back to around page 800 does it slow down. I then moved up to around page 1500, and it was even slower, taking 6-7 seconds. So, I can now see that I'll never get through the thing at this rate. I then got the idea of connecting, deleting the book, and reinstalling from the Library. The guy waited while I did this, and got the exact same results. So, it seems obvious it is some glitch in the book itself. Anyhoo, he gave me the Connect support number and called them. They took all the info and said they'd refer it to a techie who would try the book himself, but if he could not find some way to fix it, they'd give me a credit for it Which is nice, but it is really an excellent book, so probably will have to go buy a pbook version to find out how it comes out. Or, buy a Kindle. ![]() |

I've had mine nearly as long as you have and have had almost no problem with it, but early this week, when reading a book nearly as long as yours, suddenly the page turn wouldn't work. I could go to the menu option, but returning to the book did not reactivate the page turn. I had to get out of that book, open another, turn some pages and then go back to the book I was reading in order to be able to read again.
However, I then noticed that the battery was draining rapidly. It went from full, through all the stages to low battery in a couple of hours. I charged it overnight and then began reading the next day and the battery drain continued. I reset the Reader and deleted the book and then reinstalled it and the pages turned faster than I can remember them ever turning. The battery drain has stopped. No idea what that was all about. The book, by the way, is on a memory card, which is where most of my books are anyway. And maybe the page turn speed is where it is supposed to be and I'd just gotten used to them turning slower? I've got a Kindle on order and if you wanted to be paranoid, you could say the Reader is in a snit about that. ![]() Jim |

I found that generally if a memory card is inserted, page turning and bookmarking is slower. So I only use internal memory now for reading. I do have a memory stick to store books and use copy hack to copy book in when needed. But I keep the memory card slot empty when reading.

I have a book that has 1255 pages at small. My small is 11point in Book Designer for this book. When I make it Large it has 2797 pages. I jumped around starting at 800 and then 2500 and I get no page slowdown using my 505.
Do you also get this same slowdown viewing the book in Connect or Ebook Library? |

For research purposes ONLY: Send me a copy of the aforementioned title and author and I will run it on my 505 and compare speeds between lower and higher pages ![]() |

I had this happen with my 500 once when I was reading a very large book that I'd formatted with BD. I ended up deleting it and reinstalling it and also performing a reset and it solved the problem. You might try it and see what happens. Couldn't hurt.

See if you get any slowdown with my Edgar Rice Burroughs "Barsoom" omnibus:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10212 You probably won't find many larger books - it's 3300 pages at "S" size, 7600 pages at "L". |

Would removing other books improve performance?
("The Road" is a short novel, so maybe text length isn't the issue ![]() |

I use a memory card too and keep all my books on it. I long ago noticed a slowdown on very large books as you move through them. Never thought much about it and just assumed it was a an issue with the file size. One of the things I started doing was taking large books and breaking them in half, since I reformat pretty much all my books to rip out any DRM and put them in the font size I prefer as a defautl.
If you do move the large ones to the internal memory it should fix the slow down problem. Or you could try the Part 1-Part 2 approach. |

As it happened with this and the shorter one too, still can help but believe it was a glitch in the digital publishing. BTW, it was in the main memory (don't use a card), there were only a few other books on at that time, it still happened after I had deleted it and sent it back to the PC and reloaded, and it only occurred part-way through each time, can't see how it would be the Reader. Also, I have had a couple of books as large as this one without any problem, so doubt whether it was the size. All of the books involved with this problem came from the Connect store. Although will keep the 500 for MR and PG books, Santa ordered me a Kindle which is now scheduled for delivery on 1/25 (ordered 12/2). Will see how that meets my needs, especially my requirement for large type. If only I could meld the best features of both devices, I'd have a winner! |

I haven't played with any embedded fonts yet. Does that slow down the reader? Maybe they started with something like that at page 800.
