Downloading from Smashwords

I have a kobo ereader and I just tried to download some books from smashwords.com. They download to Adobe Digital Editions but they don't show up on my library list to transfer to my Kobo. Does anyone know if I can only read the books online and will I have to re-download every time from smashwords.com?

Smashwords books do not have any DRM applied to them,so they can be downloaded to any directory on your computer. After that you can plug in your Kobo, tell it to manage your books, and then drag and drop the new book onto the the Kobo window that opens up. No need to use ADE for books from Smashwords.

When you download the file, make sure you are hitting "Save" rather then "Open" - then you have to import it into ADE.

If you hit Open on an .epub file on a website, it will open in ADE to view it, but it's only temporarily there.

If the file is a .ascm file (like from the library or other DRM site), using Open is okay because it's opening the license first which tells it to then download.

I had the same problem with books from another source. They'd download and I could read them right away, but if I went to the Library View, they disappeared.

What you need to do is Save the file. Then, in ADE, go to the Library View and click on the "Library" drop-down menu. Then choose "Add Item to Library" and select the book you just downloaded. Then it will appear in your Library View every time you start ADE (so you don't have to download it every time!) and you can transfer it to your Kobo from there, too.

Why not solve your problem the easy way, Cara, simply by downloading the excellent and free Calibre Library software (http://ww.calibre-eboob.com)? Many of us here at MR -- maybe even the vast majority -- use the programme. Luck and best wishes. Neil
