'Page Error' on some books

I just wanted to post a note for anyone experience a Page Error like me. I didn't find any fixes referring to this online and so had to trouble shoot it myself.

I received a "Page Error" message on my sony 650 when opening some free books I recently downloaded. The first few pages load then the book crashes and I have to hit the "home" button. The books in question were in zip or mobi format and were converted to EPub by Calibre. Turned out it was caused by SVG images in the books. Sony can't read the SVG format and once it reaches the relevant page, the book crashes! I was able to remove the images by exploding the EPubs in Calibre, and removing the references to SVG files.

I hope this helps anyone else who comes across this problem. Maybe Calibre should check for svg references and remove them (just a thought) when making EPubs for Sony Devices.

I've got that error message in one of my EPUB's too.
Only on mine, it won't even load the first page (the cover page) which is a .png file.

I've tried switching the cover page with another .png image, but it didn't work either.
I've also tried just removing the cover page. No dice, still can't view the EPUB.

I haven't found any info on this either, hopefully someone else has more experience with this?
I just got my PRS-950 not too long ago, so I'm still learning the ropes. Someone help please!

I had this problem with a couple epubs and I fixed it using Calibre. You just have to convert it from epub to... epub! Kind of weird to "convert" it to the same format but it did work for me. I think the problem is that the epub is made up of a bunch of smaller files (html?) and if they are too big, it causes the reader to choke. Calibre seems to fix this automatically when it does a conversion.

I tried that with mine but it didn't seem to work...but I'll try again tomorrow to verify it.

I think you'll find that for a Sony all of the XHTML files which make up the ePub must be less than 270kb, or you'll get this error message.

The topic has been done to death on the ePub forum, and some people assert that the limit is 300kb. I keep all the files to less than 270kb to be sure.

Regards, Alex

In my case it was definitely the references to the SVG images. I didn't delete the files from the epub, just the html <img /> tags referencing the svg files. So document size wasn't a factor at all.

That's weird, because I removed the only xhtml file that was over 270 KB and it was still giving me the error...

Edit: Never mind, I ran it through Calibre again and it fixed the issue. Yays!

Thanks to you both. If it comes up again on the ePub forum I'll let people know.

Yeah, I think for most people for most errors in epubs a second run in Calibre will fix it, but Calibre wasn't editing out the non-compatable image format (svg).

The sony will read:
JPEG, GIF, PNG, and BMP only.
