Calibre Becomes Unresponsive While Adding Books.

Dear Calibre Creator,
I am a new user, and just started to use 0.8.0. I am trying to load my collection of books, about 4-5k titles, in html/fb2, into a newly created Colibre Library, using "add books from dir and sub dirs, multiple books per dir". The things go ok for a while, then program stops doing anything - in about 10-15min, processor usage drops from 100% to ~2, the GUI is not responsive, I have to kill the process, restart app, and try again (with ~ the same result). if I separate the job in smaller chunks, it finishes each one ok - but it's debatable a good idea. the same happens on 2 machines: older under xp and newer under vista. Have you tested adding books from a dir with many books in it? How many is safe? I will be grateful for a constructive idea or advice, as well as for 0.8.1 with this behavior fixed:-).
Thanks!

Are any of the books you are adding PDFs? If so go to preferences - plugins and disable the Metadata reader plugin for PDFs. There is a problem with this plugin that can cause your symptoms and since this plugin uses third party code it won't be fixed any time soon.

I had a very similar experience and figured out in my case it is the metadata backup causing the problem - just leave it alone and eventually it will come back to life - I would avoid force quitting

If you look at library maintenance > backup status you can see how many books it has left to process.

I had the same problem with a large directory (thousands) of books, many of which were the result of scanning and OCR of my old paperback collection. They are in all kinds of formats and author/title arrangements, far too many to standardise.

Calibre did a couple of subdirectories, and then froze completely. After waiting an hour I gave up and terminated the program.

Also, of the books that did get into the database, many had the author and title switched, or one of the two missing entirely.

That's usually because you allowed calibre to use internal metadata, and the internal metadata in you r books was bad. Most users will find that they have bad internal metadata and that it works best to get metadata of title and author from the filename. If that's bad, it's often best to fix the filenames first, then import, telling calibre to get metadata from the fixed filenames.
