i have a file like ***.prc. this file i would like to convert with calibre (i think it should go with this program). but when i start calibre to look what is in the file, i get an error message:

PRC is, in fact, not an ebook format, but merely a container for data that is supposed to go onto Palm devices. It looks like the actual book data inside that container is not in a format supported by Calibre.
You could explain in a little more detail, though, what you mean by "when i start calibre to look what is in the file"- Do you mean you tried to add the file to your Calibre library and got that error message, or did you add the file to the library and got the error message when you tried to open the file in the ebook viewer or convert it?

As Manichean correctly noted, the PRC (Palm ResourCe) file structure is a container format. Its contents can be formated for various uses. Most ebook formats for PalmOS use the other PalmOS container structure, the PDB (Palm DataBase). Mobipocket is the only ebook format that I'm aware of that uses the PRC container and Calibre has no difficulty with these.

The eight character ID, "APPLSMMM", indicates that this file is an application since the first four characters are "APPL". A Google search did find an obscure hit that I couldn't open but its brief quote leads me to think this might be a stock manager application. Perhaps you copied the wrong file for conversion.
