English native readers, imagine: you have a book (fictiv).
Author: Pelham Greenville Wodehouse
Title: Stanley Featherstonehough Ukridge 3.
Format: PDF

Open it from Calibre, in STDU Viewer.
In title bar and on the tab you see:
Stanley Featherstonehough Ukridge 3_ - Pelham Grenville Wodehouse

It is illogical: why title first? I DO NOT WANT SO. Author is most important. Go to library, and look with your eyes! And wrong seems (3_ instead of 3.).

You say, no probleme, Calibre is so beautiful, that you leave him to distort YOUR thinking? Hmm... OK, it is your decision.

But look the next! You see this:
Vúdhauz Pelem Grínvil: Júkridzs Sztenli Fensó

How about it? Do you like it? No? THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME, WHAT DO CALIBRE WITH MY HUNGARIAN BOOKS.

Please, do not say me, that in 2015, when UTF-8 is used in deep african villages already, is not possible to let me read my books, as they written.

Please, do not say me, that I can export out the book, and read after. ALL force me to read directly, from Calibre. One click -- or export > open that folder > open that file: compare them! Why not to open book in outer application through this process, automatically? NO REAL ARGUMENT against.

If to make interfaces, alredy the hundredth, to any web site, that sells 5 books in year, developers have time -- why they have no time to solve: not to kill the other people languages?

By the way: Foobar2000 CAN handle UTF-8. Mp3tag CAN, too. Total Commander CAN, too.
Calibre CAN NOT.

Is this a complaint about filename order or UTF-8??? Filenames have nothing to do with the titlebar anyway, the titlebar shows the title metadata and format of the book.
(PDF, lousy format that it is, has flaws in its support. Filename is used instead.)
As for filenames containing underscores, that occurs when invalid characters exist in the metadata. For instance

?"/\<>*|:

The period should never appear multiple times in a row, or at the end of a filename. Perhaps there is a bug whereby this transformation is applied on each field rather than the whole filename -- because that period seems safe to me.



P.S. calibre understands UTF-8, I have no idea what you are trying to suggest. Nor have you actually said what you think is wrong with calibre's support of UTF-8.

I try to suggest not to kill my language. Calibre REWRITES all, that use more letters, than english. Hungarian words in this way became unreadable.

Book (fictiv) is: Bővérű János: Űrhajó égbe tör
Calibre rewrites to: Urhajo egbe tor - Boveru Janos.

It's unreadable. It's not hungarian. It's not a language.

In my samples I rewrote english EXACTLY in that way, what Calibre follow with non-english words. I rewrote them so, as they must be written in hungarian and are written in russian. Reverted, inverse examples.

Hungarian letters are not invalid. Only other.

If there IS a way to open a book in outer application normally - manually: than it could be done automatically, of course.

FWIW, I think he is trying to say that instead of "title - author" he wants to see "author: title" in the title bar.

I would think this should come under localization rules instead of an actual problem with Calibre.

The other complaint about dropping Hungarian letters.... I don't fully understand the problem.... perhaps some of the letters he references are not in the proper UTF-8 locations????

Sorry laji, we are trying to break through the language barrier to better understand your complaint. Perhaps if you attach some images of exactly the problem, it will help.

So far, I have that you want "author: title" and that your UTF-8 letters are not being displayed in UTF-8 - they are losing the diacritics - on the title bar and on the tabs.

What is the filename? What OS are you using??

I understand you are talking about the titlebar and tab -- i.e. the document and application name.

You aren't supposed to see "title - author" either.




The document name which is used to set the application titlebar and taskbar tab, is derived from the book's metadata. The metadata used is "title". Just title -- no authors anywhere there.
The embedded-in-ebook-file metatdata, not the calibre library metadata, in case that makes a difference.


I would like to point out, again, that PDF is a very bad format. I believe there are unresolved issues with metadata handling, competing ways of mebedding metadata in a PDF, and that is on top of the fact that it is difficult to convert -- I don't know why anyone would want to read PDF in calibre's ebook-viewer.

I want booth: the order (author - title), too, but much more important are diacritics, and generally all letters, in case of russian.

1. Filename sending has nothing contact with filetype itself.
2. I have now 21 formats in Calibre. I read only 3 of them in Calibre (and they are not very important for me). All others I send to the outer applications.
3. Again: if the task can be done manually, then it can be done automatically, too. As I wrote: create a file (if Calibre want so, let it be, temporary) with name, created from the metadata, and send THIS file to the outer reader application. So easy.

1: calibre "normalizes" all filenames in the library to use strictly ASCII characters; no accented characters; periods are replaced by underscores etc. (I can't right now find a link to this; however this is working AS DESIGNED and won't change)

OK. But I do not see the reason, why did you write this reply. Do you think, I do not understand these facts? "...is caused by two things": this is, simply, not true.

1. and 2. points of your reply: both must not be. Simply, no reason, why. Foobar2000 can play a FLAC file and do with it anything, what you want, and send it to any other application (through Tools) -- and does not force me to store my files in "his" place, with language-killer filenames. Files all remains with own, ANY language filename, with own letters -- hungarian too, russian too, greek too...

Total Commander can handle it, too. Windows too. Mp3tag too. All they can do ANYTHING, without killing the language.

What you call "normalisation", really is "abnormalisation". Fortunately, not all languages of the world are so poor, as english. Hungarian, for example, has 46 letters - not 22, as english.

And, AGAIN: please, read, I wrote 3× already: what can be done manually, can be done automatically, to. If Calibre want preserve illogical, nationality-insulting, racist, discriminative filename system, then it can make temporary file for reading.

As I know, Kovid is hindu. Did he forget about english imperialists, who killed people in India? Or does he like it? In any case: I do not like the killing of my language.
