Question Mac OS X 10.4 user, new to eReading, considering buying NC - but can I use it?

Hello,

I am new to eReading/eReaders and am considering buying a NC. However, my main computer is a PowerPC Mac running OS X 10.4.11 and from what I am reading here that means that I can't use the Nook for Mac reader because it is only made for 10.6. Does this indeed mean that I can't use a NC or even a regular Nook 3G/Wireless (which I am also considering purchasing?) How will I be able to side load books, mp3's, pictures and videos to the Nook(s)? Isn't there also some issue with the formats that books are downloaded in when they are downloaded by Macs as compared to PCs and the format not being supported by Nooks or is it the Nook reader software? I am confused.

Basically what problems am I going to have using a Nook or NC given that I am using a Mac?

Some other questions:

How is the NC's music player's sound quality? Can it serve as a replacement for an iPod touch? Would I be able to walk with the NC in my bag/pocket while listening to it?

What specs do I have to make pictures and videos in order to view them on the NC?

Does either the N or NC have some sort of basic note program where I can write little reminders or To Do Lists?

Finally, does anyone know if there is something like the Hoodman video-camera hood (see picture) that one can attach to a NC so as to make it easier to read outdoors?

Thanks in advance for ANY and ALL help!!!

The books that you download will keep their default format no matter what. In other words, when you download a B&N ebook, it will be downloaded as ePub, regardless If you are using Ubuntu, PC or MAC.

Don't expect spectacular sound from an ereader, but most of them, including Nook have an ok sound. Headphones are recommended if you want better or louder sound. Stick to your iPod, is much better and has more functionalities. But you can listen songs with the Nook for sure, is bigger though.

Regarding uploading content, I don't own a Mac but the Nook is basically a Linux device which means, it us usually mounted as an external drive. Most operating systems see ereaders as another drive and then you just drag and drop your ebooks or mp3s.

Can't help you with your camera question ....

Thank you So Much for the help! I really appreciate it!

As to the hood, I was just hoping that there was some sort of "Nook Color hood" that would make it easier to use outdoors. Oh well.

The web browsers are just for your account on B&N once it is downloaded than you can side-load it to your nook color. But why buy a nook color and ebooks than read it on your Mac?

I did a search and yes the nook of mac is Intel mac only but all is not lost

Here is calibre it is a nice ebook manager and reader and it is for your Mac 10.4 OSX get the 0.728.dmg

http://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx

I use this mainly for managing my ebook library.

As the nook mounts on your Mac's Desktop as an external hard drive, you just have to drop the ePubs (PDFs, MP4s) into the correct folders on the nook.

A few things to remember:

1. When you plug the nook into the Mac, you must turn on the nook and slide the on-screen unlock in order for the mounting to take place.

2. A message pops up on the nook screen reminding you to unmount the nook's drive from your Desktop before you disconnect. Remember to do so. Once it's unmounted, the nook screen will change and it's now okay to disconnect the nook

3. Your Mac will drop "dot" files onto the nook which you won't see in the Finder; however, Pathfinder (a Finder alternative) lets you see invisibles and delete them.

4. If you want to encode videos for your nook, use Handbrake and the "iPod Touch/iPhone" preset. It's okay, however, to increase the frame size up to 854 pixels wide x 600 tall (obviously, keep the proportion correct). This preset leaves out "B" frames and it works like a charm.

While some folks really like to have an app manage their eBook library (like Calibre), I have a folder on my Mac full of my eBooks. Books that have been transferred to the Nook I set to yellow. When I have finished reading one on my Nook, I set its color (on my Mac) to red to indicate it's been read and then toss it off the Nook the next time I connect it.

Lots of different ways to work with this "half-an-iPad".

When I clicked for it to convert, it said it was drm'd so I went back out to www. & downloaded a de-DRM but when I went to use it, it said it wasn't for my OS :-( How do I de DRM. Can I read my e-book in calibre without having a nook ?

Just to clarify- You do not *need* any software on your Mac to sideload ebooks, PDFs, music, etc. I run 10.5 on my main computer, but the only software I installed was Adobe Digital Editions for managing library books.

Calibre does not strip DRM. If you have a legal ePub purchased from B&N, it will download straight to the Nook. To read it on your Mac, download the "Nook Reader App" and read it on with that. If you purchased the book from another store, use Adobe Digital Editions to authorize your machine (and your Nook) to read the book.
