seams that all books published before 2011 pick up a bulished date of January as the published date when downloading metadata

Seems to have started about the 15 of March (befor that, I have Months for non 2011 years)

Yes, that is because the xISBN service that calibre >= 0.8 uses to get they publish date of the earliest edition of a work provides only the year. So the month defaults to January.

Kovid is saying the Lookup source is only sending Year info. (the field requires a real Date, so Calibre pads it with Month 1 and Day 1).

You are free to enter any real date at any time.

It won't do you any good if the source isn't sending the month/date info, it isn't sending it. (downgrades usually work, but not always)

Probably NOT.
Every so often, the DB structure gets updated to support a new feature.
Moving within a couple of point releases might be safe.
