3Gs iPhone / reader/player on nonactive unit
When I upgrade my 3GS iphone to 4G next week, will I be able to side load MP3 and ebooks through iTunes, even though it will not longer be activated? It seems sad to not be able to use it as a media device. It has such a great external speaker for audio books.

I don't see why not. Just treat your 3GS like an iPod touch.

Sure you could. I'm still using an old iPhone 2G as back-up music player. Alas, I couldn't stand to use it as back-up e-reader anymore. I've been spoiled by the Retina Display. I'm looking into buying a refurbished iPod Touch 4th generation for cheap when the new models are announced/released for use as back-up reader.

I chatted with an ATT rep about that as we're looking at upgrading our 3G phones to the 4. He said it will work as an iTouch, you just shut off the 3G network. You'll want to make sure that you keep your sim card - it won't function at all without it. Not an issue going from a 3G to a 4 as they're a different size card, but I don't know what's in your 3GS.

I've never owned an iPhone, but usually the "smart" part of a smartphone continues to function even if you discontinue their cellular service.
