Kindle 3 or Kindle DX?
I want to upgrade my Kindle 2 to the new pearl e-ink screens. So far, the Kindle has been my favourite among all the devices I've tried, so I'll stick with it. But I'm not sure whether to get the larger screen of the DX or just get a 6" Kindle 3.
I've had a 9.6" irex device and liked the extra space (software was not great though, so I sold it). But since I recently got an iPad, I already have a larger screen reader, which works very well for PDFs and other types of documents that usually requires a large screen - and I don't really expect the Kindle to take its place in that respect. I plan to use the new Kindle mostly at home - I'd prefer to take the iPad (or iPhone) with me out. And while I don't mind reading books on it, I would prefer to have an e-ink device for that - especially for evening reading, as I have a problem with insomnia and a back-lit screen can disturb the body's sleep rhythms.* Basically I think it comes down to that the larger screen of the DX would be nice, but it's also more expensive, and I don't really need it. A Kindle 3 wifi would be half the price, lighter to sit with and I can get the lighted cover for it, which is a bonus. What do you think? |

Since you do have an iPad i would go for the K3 instead of the KDXG.

If I was in your position I'd go with the Kindle 3.

I like the DX size format far better than the regular kindle. However, Amazon is not updating the DX to the latest features so far. Based on their failure to upgrade the DX line I would be very hesitant to buy an Amazon device now.

I bought the DX because I'm old, can't read small print, and I'd never seen an ereader and was tired of waiting to see one. First, the price difference is not insignificant. The DX is 3.3 times the price of the new $114 K3. The DX is 2.7 times the price of the standard K3 WiFi.
The DX was fine. It was awkward to carry around. Not as bad as an IPad, of course, but not slam dunk convenient, either. Not surprisingly, three weeks after I got my DX I saw a 6" K2 in the wild. The person let me hold it and I discovered I could read it easily. It was fine. After considering the issue for awhile I ordered a K3 WiFi. I enjoy it. My DX is back in the U.S. with my sister putting it up for sale. A small detail. The DX was 3G only. For me, 3G is markedly slower than WiFi and where I live it went down more often than my router. |

I had the kindle DX and the smaller Kindle 3 - 6" .. I definitely prefer the kindle 3... It is very light and I can hold it for hours and read and I don't miss the larger screen.

K3 all the way. Since you can make the fonts as large as you like, there is no real need for a larger screen.

I'd recommend to go with K3.
I have both. Extra screen space on KDX is not worth the extra weight and size when reading books. It comes in handy when reading PDFs but you already have that covered with iPad |

I have k3 and iPad and I think they make a good combination and complement each other well.. Note that the larger screen aside, the k3 has better hardware and software than the DX, which is kind of an oversized k2.1. You're also losing wifi and page buttons on both sides. I would only get the kxg if I could get a used one for really cheap, like $150.

Kindle 3
I do also have an iPad and use it for reading some color Magazines, light Internet Browsing and PDFs; last one, is the one where iPad shines when using GoodReader. The Kindle 3 is really portable and light. You can use it at home, at bed , outdoors, has the perfect size. The Kindle DXG is not as heavy as iPad but it is kind of bulky. For reading the same novel or book, it makes no sense to me. The DX is more suitable for PDF files, poetry, or computer books, where you need a big screen to avoid cutting off some lines. Like I said, you have an iPad already so you can use it with Kindle app. for those type of books. Also, Kindle 3 is less expensive ... ![]() |

I have both and prefer the DXG. I like the larger screen and the extra reading room that comes with it. I use the K3 when I am traveling because it is easier to fit into my bag and more comfortable to use on the plane. I use the DXG when I am at home.
