The original kindle keyboard vs Paper white?
hi all,
I have been using a 6" Kindle keyboard since 2012 and it's still working great. It has Wifi and 3G. Will I see any big difference if I get a Paper White with the 300 ppi (vs my 167 ppi)? 99% I read is books, the other 1% is pdf books. I know what the specs are but I haven't seen one in person. I'd appreciate your share your own experience. Thank you! mike- |

There's a huge difference in screen quality, both in terms of contrast and resolution. In addition to which, the lighting tremendously improves readability in poorer lighting conditions.

No brainer. Go for the PW3. It's the screen is so much better. The light is very nice to have. The touch screen is much better than the buttons. Overall, the PW3 just beats the K3 hands down.

My wife and I both find the original K3 fully functional and see no need to change.
I would compare it a little to eyeglasses. CR-39 plastic lenses, available since the 1940's, are fine and I have no desire to change. Newer, generally more expensive ones have some advantages -- thinner -- and disadvantages -- worse optics -- making, for me, no interest in changing. I'm not saying progress doesn't occur. But newer isn't automatically better. The Kindle is superior to the Palm devices I previously used for eReading. I just don't see giving up something I like -- the keyboard, and the music player -- for something I don't need. As for a light, it's just not generally needed, but we use these in the bedroom: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20315674/ I used to say that the tremendous advantage of the K3 was world-wide 3G web access for text-based sites. This is now greatly degraded due to Google dropping its old flexible mobilizer, resulting in www.readingthenet.com no longer working. But you still can send an email, from almost everywhere, in a pinch. |

When I upgraded to the Voyage, my PW2 went to my Mum to try out. She used it for a week or so then decided to just stick with her Kindle Keyboard. I personally wouldn't go back, but each to their own!

I went from my basic kindles straight to the Voyage. The difference was actually not as jawdropping as some of the posts here suggested (the basics had very good contrast too), but I still read exclusively on the Voyage and the Oasis now. The basics just don't look as good.
BTW, I've read in several places that the PW3 has worse contrast than the Voyage and the Oasis. Not having a PW3 myself, I don't know if it's true or not. |

Are you saying that the Pearl screen has seen improvements over the years? If so that is news to me. |

The K4's (and later) that I've seen have had screens that were WAY better than the screen of my KK. Have you not found this to be so?

My KK has better contrast than all of the basic kindles that came after it. But they're all subtle variations on the same contrast. I've found the only significant improvement in contrast is the Carta screens on my Kobo Glo HD and Aura H2O.

Judge for yourself. Here your have a video with both of them, PW 300ppi and the Kindle 3.
(Personally I have a PW2 2013 that I never use. And I'm not the only one). Last edited by boromir; 08-08-2016 at 12:11 PM. |
