Welcome Lolita!
Let's see if we can sort this out. You can use the Sony Reader Library to manage your books OR Calibre. If you already have Sony Reader Library and Adobe Digital Editions you are fine. Actually you won't need Adobe Digital Editions as the Sony software can handle everything just as well alone. There is no further need for calibre. Calibre is a programm for library management that is incredibly good and has lots of features. The downside is, one has to get used to it a bit to work all its features. But the "normal" library management is very easy. Most people will recommend Calibre for its vast array of features and many dislike the Sony Reader Library, so this is why everyone keeps telling you about it. I do use both Sonys Reader Library and Calibre and have to say that I think Sony is a tad easier for those who are not so good at the computer. Also the Sony Reader Library is similar to iTunes and this you should know already. Now for Kindle and Sony. They use different file formats. It is a bit like Windows and Macs. So the Sony reader is Windows and uses epubs to run and the Kindle is the Mac and uses mobi files to run. When you buy books now or as in this example programms the one can't read the format of the other machine. Clear till here? Ok. So this means no books for one machine will be readable on the other. There is a way to circumvent this, but it involves Calibre, some other software, the breaking of DRM (which is not discussed here on the boards) and your willingness to circumvent/bend/break the law, which depends on the country you live in. For further information search for the terms: Apprentice Alf and deDRM. Hope this helps. |

![]() Welcome to Mobileread …. From what I've read, folk here often say ditch the Sony software and use Calibre instead - but it'll depend on what you are used to as Poppaea advises ... |

Hi Lolita and welcome to MobileRead. I've had a Sony 505 for over three years now and really like it although I've kept using a windows machine. I use both the Sony Library and Calibre.

You can download Calibre right here. Just go to our E Book Software Section and Calibre is the first in the list. And it is free!!

Welcome to MR. I have a Mac, too, and I am unaware of needing the tools file that you mention. Is the file you downloaded a .dmg file?

You really need to ask for help in the Calibre Forum ... rather than in here ...
