Which options are in France?
I moved to France for a while. And I plan to get me some tool to access my virtual library. It should read PDFs, TXTs, ePUBs. It would be nice to have DJVUs, CHMs and HTMLs. Sincerely I like what eInk advertises. I have a mobile phone who uses that technology and it is really really impressive. Also, longer battery time is to be desired.
I have no use for Microsoft Office support (doc, xls, etc). Also I need a way to upload the books (by card reader, by usb) Wifi seems to be a waste of space and battery power. Also I am against 3G no matter how free that seems. I read about Kindle 3 Wifi. The brand Kindle is scarry as it has a history of going around and doing things for you even if it is your own tool. Like deleting books without asking. Yet it has all the above and a small price. I'm talking of course about the no-advertising version. It gets stranger, as amazon.fr dumps me in amazon.com which means paying some taxes, having a more expensive delivery in more days and having to let the bank convert my euros in US dollars. What options do I have in France? |

Get a cybook or sony reader.
You can go at the fnac or darty to have a look at them both ![]() Quote:

By easy I mean you can find find then in shops (or website) actually located in France. So no import, higher delivery cost and all).
There is also the fnacbook in term of cheaper, but it's not the same quality. Surcouf have the pocketbooks too i think. (But their website seams to be off, so i can't check.) Ah, pixmania have a few e-readers. http://www.pixmania.com/fr/fr/Ebook/...mp2786_cm.html |

Amazon won't delete your books without authorization. There were isolated cases and long time ago, mainly because legal issues (with the book) but that's past.
Having said that, it looks like a Sony or Kindle 3 fits the bill. If you read a lot of PDFs, I would recommend you a Kindle DXG because it is bigger for PDF documents hence, easier to read and use. But I honestly prefer a tablet for PDF documents instead of eink (more features and faster) You should also look into Pandigital, but not sure about availability there in your area and customer support. |

Never heard of bookeen before. Quite interesting. Once you get to the specifications which are quite low for the given price.
Sourcouf seems to be working. By the way: which online stores do you use for shopping for electronics and photography gear? |

The Sony's have the best track record with PDFs but they still don't do a great job. Harry will eventually show up and tell you that PDF's are meant to be read at a specific size and e-readers are not able to match that size.
As for Amazon deleting books, it happened a couple of years back. Everyone who had the books deleted got a gift certificate for a free book and the option of having the book returned or a second gift certificate for a book. The PR was pretty darn bad, I seriously doubt it would happen again. Not to mention, people who had downloaded a copy of the book to their desktop where able to reload the book safely when it was removed. So if you do the smart thing, save all of your files to your computer, you would be fine. I type this less because I am going to convince you of anything but more because I don't want others to think that you are right. |

Ah, if you mainly want to read pdf, go for the prs-650, or cybook orizon. For experience with the orrizon, tactile screen helps navigating, and makes wandering though the pages way less tedious. (At least if properly used).
Reading pdf on the orizon is an OK experience, once you get the trick. And don't want to shift though the pages. PRS-650 is said to be good at it (it have reflow). Quote:

Yes, you are right, the touchscreen does add a lot to the experience and usability. Last year I moved from a Nokia E50 (last Nokia ever in my possesion) to a Samsung S5230. The larger screen and the touch made everything way better. But, as pointed before, I need something at around 6 inch diagonal and which can do PDFs as well - text is well handled by the phones. So probably I'll choose between Sony PRS650 and Samsung E65.

@Sidd,
I think you are too concerned and paranoid about security and privacy. All Os and devices will have flaws and potential privacy issues. The only way to avoid that is not connecting to any network whatsoever. I am not worried about my books because regardless of the format or device, I always make backup copies of my books. I strongly suggest you that otherwise, you will be relying on Sony, B&N, O'Reilly or whatever the company where you bought your books is or was , your backups and file protection. By the way, this comment... Quote:

i can understand Sidd on some point. You American tends to forget that the e-book situation in the US isn't the same as in other part of the world.
Yeah, we tends to suggest our own readers more easily. Because they're the one the fits us ![]() And well, I feel I can speak about the cybooks, because I own them, i know their good points and their bad points. For the other readers, i can only speak from hearsay. Honestly the "privacy" issue isn't the problem I have in mind with the kindle. More the technically inferior and less open mobi, as well as the lesser choice in e-book. (right now, no mobi book from the french publishers). |
