Need help sorting the 'on device' column

I am having trouble setting up a saved sort using the on-device column. What I want to do is plug in the Kindle and then be able to go to a saved search that only shows me unread books which are NOT loaded on there. I am using the stars to indicate read status, so I already have a saved search for unread books. But that still leaves me with a large number of books to scroll through, even if I sort them so the unread ones move to the top. Is there a way to set up a saved search so that it only shows me the unread books not on the device?

There's a special column created whenever a device is connected. It's called ondevice. You can use that column to create your search, however, it will only work when a device is actually connected and recognized by Calibre.

I know that. I am just not sure how to set up the search so it only shows the unread books.

Assuming that a book having a rating indicates you have read it, then presumably you are using rating:false or rating:0 to show your unread books.

So you would want a search of:
ondevice:false and rating:false

The search will error if the ondevice column is not present.
ondevice:false and #read:0 (stars are really numbers 0-5)
