The incredible floating fire ant

Congress — and perhaps the rest of us — could learn a thing or two about teamwork from Solenopsis invicta, the dreaded fire ant.

When in danger of drowning, a colony of the critters — thousands of them — will save themselves by joining forces and forming a raft. They pile together and lock legs and jaws.

So bound, an ant raft can survive for months.

Have you noticed that all of us in the Southeastern U.S. have an absolute horror of fire ants?

Its ridiculous! I've had to ban the kids from their own backyard because of fire ant activity! Orkin comes out and we get maybe a one or two week reprieve...sometimes; other times its like the ants don't care and are still everywhere.

I have a bite in the back of my knee, right in the bend. Every time I move, it sets off the itching. It would be fine with me if their rafts sank and they all drowned. We are experts at creating extinctions, so why are these creatures allowed to proliferate like this?

Because like roaches (ewww don't even get me started on those) they will live forever!!!!!
