Stuck: Please Help Me Decide
I have been going back and forth over what I'd like to read next, and these 2 particular series have been fighting for my attention, so I would like your advice, please:
1. Honorverse -The Honor Harrington Series & Anthologies, in chronological order - The first 9 books in the main series would be a reread but the anthologies and books 10+ would be new to me. 2. The Wiz Series - I have Wizards Bane & Wizardry Compiled already, and can get books 3 & 4 from Baen, but I can not find an e-copy of book 5. - The whole series is new to me. I can only find a synopsis of Wizard's Bane (Book 1): "What "Wiz" Zumwalt could do with computers was magic on Earth. Then, one day the master computer hacker is called to a different world to help fight an evil known as the "Dark League". Suddenly, the "Wiz" finds himself in a place governed by magic - and in league with a red-headed witch who despises him." I intend to read the May 2011 Mobile Read Book Club selection, unless it is 1984, which is unfortunately in the lead at the moment. I haven't read anything in a week. Thank You. ![]() Last edited by Nyssa; 04-29-2011 at 11:37 AM. Reason: Add'l info. |

Read the Wiz series... I've read the first and have an omnibus of 2 & 3 (I think) on my reader. For a computer geek, the first one was a truly fun read.

Depends on what you're in the mood for. The Wiz books* are a light, breezy read that goes by quickly. If you want more depth and seriousness, then the Honorverse sounds like the thing to try.
Or you could just start both books and switch between them until one of them really draws you in. * The 5th, unfortunately, was never released in e-edition and the 6th which Cook had planned was sidelined due to his health problems, although he's put up the unfinished bits online, with some notes and comments on his blog. |

I've had the Wiz series on my HDD for a long while not but never have started them. I might have to do just that over the weekend. I like my Fantasy SF to be light hearted and sort of breezy. I enjoyed the Harold Shea stories by L. Sprague de Camp and sense those are similar to The Wiz stories though obviously different.
Thanks for the thread...oh, I've started the Honorverse stories a few times now but just haven't felt like concentrating as much as they need to fully enjoy them. I've been in that sort of a reading funk the past few years preferring instead to listen to Audible versions. I know that makes me not much of a reader!! ![]() Oh, if you enjoy the Honorverse and haven't tried the John Grimes Rim Worlds/Far Traveler series by A. Bertram Chandler, I recommend them a lot. I read them as a teen and was totally drawn in to the stories. I remember them as very character driven and not too heavy on the details like modern MilSF can often be. They are lighter reads and not long so knocking them out in a week or two is very possible. They are, of course, all to be had on Baen. BTW, I too won't read the Book Club this month if it's 1984 as I have read it a dozen times or more in my life already. To me it's done and done to death so I likely won't read it again before I croak. ![]() Last edited by grumpy3b; 04-29-2011 at 04:08 AM. |

I voted for the series with fewest amount of books/words. It's just how I roll. I'd have voted for the stand-alone if you'd included one.

thanks for the update. i could have searched it myself but i was feeling lazy.
i did read up on both series and they both sound decent but if i could only choose one of them i'd still stick with the wiz series. hopefully if you do go with that one you'll be able to find the fifth book. starting a series and never finishing is always a bummer or not being able to find the rest of the series. i read a book last month from a suggestion ( saving rachel ) and thought the book was great but i was upset at the ending until someone filled me in that it was part of a series (donovan creed series) so i searched and now own all 7 that are out and reading #4 currently. crazy how a good series can do that. |

But I digress. Since forming my opinion from the synopses for both series leads me to the same decision anyway. ![]() |

Unfinished series can be maddening, especially when you know that the rest are out there, somewhere. |

I voted for the Wiz series.
I really like the first Honor books. Maybe the first 5 or 6 but I think it should have ended. Or at least come to a conclusion and then start up with a new story line. I gave up. I've read the first few Wiz books and enjoyed them. Good luck! rv |
