Drive A:
I have on my machine, for some purposes an old "floppy" (3.25") drive which I do occasionally need to use.
When I start Calibre, it activates the drive, and the empty drive clunks away. How to I stop Calibre from trying to detect the floppy drive -- and focus on the USB ports instead? |

That will happen only if you have something connected that calibre thinks is a device, like a USB stick. Go to preferences->misclellaneous and click debug device detection and post the output, that will tell us what the device is.

The problem is your blackberry. Either do not connect it to your computer when calibre is running, or go to Preferences->plugins and disable the blackberry plaugin in calibre.

Unplugging the blackberry did the trick.
I also disabled the BB plug-in within calibre but it still chugs away on the drive when the BB is plugged in. |

Are you sure you disabled the right plugin? Run the device debug again and see.

I rebooted over the weekend and that seems to have fixed the problem. I can now have my BB pugged in and Calibre up with out the A drive chugging. Thanks so much for your help.
