calibre -> kindle. newbie question

hi all

i have a decent library building up on my kindle, using calibre to get the books transferred.

however, when i scroll through the various books in calibre there's a nice little write up or plot synopsis (meta data?).

can this info be transferred to the kindle also, as nothing (apart from title) is showing up on the 60 or 70 books i transferred over initially.

thanks

Welcome to MobileRead.

There are two options that spring to mind. The first is to generate a catalog and then transfer that to your Kindle. That will give you a single "book" you can browse through with details of all the other books you put into that catalog. You can read more about catalogs here (sticky for catalogs forum)

The second option is to generate what is known as a jacket page inside the book. When you convert the book, look at "Structure Detection" and tick the box marked "Insert metadata as page at start of book". Of course using this option means you both need to reconvert all your books, send them to the device again, and have to open the book to see the summary info.

thanks; probably the second option I wouldnt need to reconvert as theyre all mobi anyway). ive found the tick box for structure detection. if i re-send the whole lot to the kindle again, will it overwrite (i hope!) the current mobi books with the metadata, or will it just create duplicates of every book? I have created a few categories too on the kindle, so wonder if i'll lose those too if i re-copy everything over?)

many thanks

I can't say anything about the categories, but if you resend the books using the same metadata you originally used to send them, they should be overwritten- unless you changed your send to device- template in between.

@gandalftheking - that you already have your books in mobi format is not the issue. The setting I am talking about I believe only takes effect during book conversions, since it is in the conversion options. So you would have to do a mobi->mobi conversion on all your books with that setting turned on to generate a new version of the book with the jacket in it, and then send the books to your Kindle again.

Try it on one book as a test. You can always untick the option and run the conversion again if you don't like it.
