New lower price on Kindle - $114
If you've been putting off buying a Wi-Fi Only Kindle, you can now get one for just over $100 (pre-order now for May 3 release, the new model is called Kindle with Special Offers).
What's the catch? You'll get ads and special offers sent direct to your Kindle (much as the nook has when used in store at Barnes and Noble) and displayed as the screensavers and at the bottom of the home page. This thread isn't for discussion of the pros/cons of the concept (there are at least two of those), but just a notice for those looking for a reader, that there is a lower price point of what is (so far), the most popular ereader on the market (just based on sales of units and books, not features or other criteria). |

... and geo-restricted to US sales only. The $114 Kindle with Special Offers is not sold outside of the US.

If you didn't turn on the wifi - would you still get the ads?

One trade-off is that you will have a (small) bit less space for books (then again, screensavers take space and no one complains much about that on anything but a k1). |

I believe the ads come over wi-fi, so if you never turn it on (or have no hotspots), then you get the same ones over and over. You'd need wifi to take advantage of them, to be sure (just like those nook ads in stores).

Anyone else reckon this will be under $100/£100 before the end of the year?

I think I'll stick with my Kindle 3 for now. It's only just going on a month old after all. I wager it won't be long after the new one comes out before someone does find a way to disable the ads and posts it to the net somewhere though. I have to wonder if this will be Amazon's Kindle ME.

can't see how saving a whopping $25 is worth having ads forever on your kindle...

Sign me up for one. It'll be free after I get the initial offers. Can't beat free

Especially when you can (with some luck) get at least $25 off a non-ad-supported Kindle at Staples via coupon. You still pay tax, but it comes out slightly cheaper than buying and waiting for shipping. Plus you get it right then (assuming it's in stock).
