Video of full color E Ink display in action
Today I stumbled over this short YouTube clip demonstrating flexible and full color e-paper displays from E Ink. Before you get too excited: According to the person being interviewed, the technology is still at least three to five years away from us.

Wow, the rolling B&W variation has a pretty impressive refresh rate too (not to mention that it rolls up). I wonder how far out that might be.

About seventy years down the road as always. Waiting for them is sooo frustrating!

3-4 years with this technology. But there are other concepts being researched by other companies too. I think the first gen color-reader would come out in 2 years from now.

Here's what the e-Ink rep says in the video: "In the research lab today, we've been able to make full-color video-rate displays. These have the same flexibility and daylight readability as the black and white displays. But, they won't be in the marketplace until about 3-5 years from now." [emphasis added]
The video of the full-color display showed it doing full-color animation in realtime with no noticable refresh or flicker. I had no idea that video-refresh-rate e-ink technology existed at all! Sure, we might get 1s refresh full-color displays in a year, but to think we'll have video refresh rates in only 3-5 years, that's pretty amazing. |

WOW. This is amazing. I have seen the color e-ink in action before, but not the video version.
This will be a major step in e-paper development. Cant wait to get my fingerson on one of those rollable color babies ![]() |

I'd bet the rolling thing is using segment addressing, it is still to see if someone wants to develop a flexible matrix addressed display.
It is amusing that they show the iLiad in landscape mode. The H2, shown after the iLiad, was time ago a custom prototype by an engineer of e-ink labs, Holly Gates (so the H, I thought, even if somewhere it is labeled H2O), I am surprised to know he has updated his design to support colour. The original H2 was "a Gumstix SBC with 400MHz Xscale processor running a modified 2.6.7 Linux kernel" and run the display using the LCD port of the Xscale chip. The reference to Harry Potter is a good one. I still think that they could put a simple slow display with a solar cell to case the "deluxe edition" of Harry Potter, next Xmas. ![]() |
