Owners of both Kindle DX and K3
Do ya'll find that having both the DX and K3 is a benefit? I am looking at possibly getting a K3 to carry around with me in my purse when I am out and about, however would hate to spend the extra money only to discover that one of the units will be stored away while the other unit is used constantly. I am nervous that one of my kids will sit or step on the DX while loading and unloading from the car. I would feel much better if a 140.00 kindle was broken or lost vs. a 400.00 kindle. I am constantly saying "DON'T step on my book!". They tend to crawl over seats and not pay attention. My oldest son has autism and simply doesn't remember from one day to the next why he shouldn't step, sit, crawl, or throw the kindle down to the floor boards. I bought an OtterBox case that I love, however it doesn't protect the screen it's self. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I had never seen a Kindle and being old with bad eyesight I got the DX. It was fine but a month after I got it I saw a 6" K2. I could read the smaller screen just fine. I ordered a K3. At first, I read the DX at home and the K3 away from home but eventually just quit reading with the DX and it's being sold now.
For me, there were no advantages to the DX--I don't read PDF--and the smaller K3 was much handier. |

I have both and use both.
It's nice to have the K3 because I can just shove it in my pocket and don't need a bag to carry it around. I always use it when I go out. When I'm at home I usually end up using the DXG no matter the file type. |

I have a K3 and DX. Both get used a lot. The K3 is great for being out, but it also sits on the nightstand where it is handy for a few minutes reading each night before sleep. The DX is a coffee table book that is handy when TV commercials get too annoying (happens a lot). The DX is great for making print bigger when eyes are tired after a day working in front of a computer screen. So each reader has definite benefits and neither gathers dust.
My wife has her own K3 and that suits her for all reading. She reads less than I do. |

I went ahead and just got a refurbished K2. I figured that it was better (for me at least) to pay 89.00 for the K2 rather than then 139.00 for the K3. Since it's just to use on the go. I hope I didn't make a mistake with the K2, but I can always exchange it within Amazon's return period should I need to.

You're also getting 3G, which is good! The only thing you're really missing is the pearl eink screen. Can't go wrong for 90 bucks though! ![]() |

I had a DX because I read a lot of pdfs that display better on it. Then I got a K3 for general reading when it came out. And to be honest, I almost never open the DX now. The K3 is so much lighter and easier to carry around and hold.
I'd start out with the K3 and see if you feel a real need for the bigger DX. Re: protection - get one of the harder-backed covers like the Amazon lighted cover. They really do provide a lot of protection. My kid has kicked my K3 off the armrest/table/chair on numerous occasions and it's been fine. Edit: OOPS! Just saw you ordered a K2! Never mind my advice - enjoy! Last edited by JaneD; 04-05-2011 at 02:19 PM. Reason: Typed too fast to see the OP didn't need my pov anymore! |

I just ordered a K3 3G. The new Oberon sleeve pushed me over the edge....
I find that the DX is great in the house but is a bit cumbersome out and about. I'll use the K3 for travel and appointments and the DXG in the house. And I really love the Cloud Dragon sleeve that Oberon has. |

Try out the K2 and see what you think. I have a K2 and a Kindle 3 and I still use both of them frequently. I call the K2 my "bathtub Kindle" but I also use it for times when risk of damage or loss is high. I've owned it for awhile now and it's more than paid for it's purchase price, if something happens I figure it's had a Kindle-Life well lived.
I mostly use my Kindle 3 for reading on the back deck and in bed at night. The main difference between the two for me is the nicer screen and much darker font on the Kindle 3. |

I only have the K3 but it is possible to convert pdf files via Calibre. There may be some that can't be converted (I don't know) but that is a solution to not being able to read at least some pdf files on the Kindle as they are.
